NUFC Transfer Rumours

Recommended Posts

Watkins never coming here,

World Cup year he's not coming knowing Isak is no1 round here.

Wissa slightly more believable but still a stretch.

Strange links tbh and does sound more like Isak succession planning than 2nd choice striker search

If we’re spending proper money on a striker then you wouldn’t go down the £50m route for Wissa or Watkins when the likes of Sesko or Osimhen would only be £10m or so more.

Horse shit rumours. They’d go full noise on Sesko I reckon.

Wissa or Watkins would be a serious shift from our usual transfer policy

I'm not sure it's that serious a shift TBH. Age-wise, sure, but two other major characteristics of our targeting are to A, pounce if there's a great, time-limited opportunity and B, be as risk-averse as possible (i.e. sign PL-proven). We're seemingly prepared to spend big if we can tick those boxes.

I dunno if A applies to Watkins and Wissa but perhaps we've identified that it does. B goes without saying.

We've not spent big on anyone of their age and wages though apart from maybe Chris Wood

Watkins sounds less likely than pretty much any other striker in the league tbh. Wissa would be ridiculously good, far too good to be back up.

Wissa is the kind of signing you’d expect a perennial CL club to make as its “12th” player. Would get plenty of starts for us.

I mean Wood is a great example of why it's not that far-fetched. Trippier too. Even Burn to some extent though his wages were probably quite different.

Watkins is 29. I could absolutely see us looking at him as someone who can justify their fees/the lack of a major sell-on because of what they'd provide. Trippier is the closest example of us doing this.

We effectively need to find the "new Wissa" when he first joined Brentford in that he was happy to be back up or play alongside Toney but have another potential that should the main striker leave/get injured they can step up effortlessly

Wissa and Watkins mentioned, I’d love both even though neither will happen.

Think he's just pulling those names out of his arse tbh.

But Watkins kicked up a fuss about not being picked for Villa last year, other than presumably getting paid more I can't see why he would join us to not get the game time he wants

Trippier and Burn were certainly not the huge fee that Watkins would command

The age thing more or less rules it out, pure clickbait if you ask me. Why would we spend big money on players 28 or 29? Yeah maybe if there was no such thing as PSR but.....

They weren't but we were also nowhere near the Champions League/raking in the revenues that we are now, so I'd argue it's maybe all relative.

I guess I can just see the logic in it from Howe's pov. Alright, we're not gonna trade those players on for a profit, but their impact will outweigh the loss. Like Tripps.

Whether Watkins would be interested is another matter but we are in the CL unlike silly old Villa.

And Wood was a bit of a panic buy imo

He definitely was but he still fit the criteria I laid out.

We are in a very different position now compared to the window when Wood, Trippier and Burn were bought. Back then we were basically willing to buy anyone who was happy to join as we were desperate to avoid relegation and didn't have to worry about PSR.

Can't see either Watkins or Wissa ever happening unless the prices were really cheap, say £25-30m. Watkins turns 30 before Christmas, Wissa 29 in couple of months.  I just don't think we are in a position yet to make signings like that when the squad is so thin and relatively old already.

I think Wissa would be great, especially if he is up for a big money deal to Saudi if we ever needed to offload him for PSR. If we have a "Saudi quota" of only being able to sell a player or two to avoid whispers and suspicions, a real deal older striker willing to go there is the perfect way to use it. A Saudi "out" would make it low risk for PSR.

Wissa himself would get to play in the CL and then have a payday to look forward to afterward.
