FTFY.  Can’t think of anything worse than ripping up the football pyramid and depriving other towns of professional football so that a handful of rich clubs can bloat their squads with pile-it-high youngsters for PSR purposes.  Happily, the FL would no doubt tell any club suggesting this to fuck right off.

Most of the FL. I suspect Rick Parry has been scheming on it for years.

It’d be interesting if English football were to develop a model like in Spain or Germany where reserve sides compete in the same pyramid. Much prefer a “Newcastle United B” cutting about in League Two to PIF buying Montpellier and making them our whipping boy.

With obvious constraints so that Chelsea can’t squirrel away PL-quality talent in their reserve side and beat the piss out of lower league sides.

Nah, that shit bet not ever happen either. Our pyramid is what makes football in this country.

Teams just need to be told / restricted on the number of players they have. All the U21s team is squad bloat so they can hoard players years on post u18.

Clubs don’t need multi clubs / B sides. They just need to loan the few players they have high hopes for, play others and release. Keep the eco system going across the pyramid.

If that then forces sides into buying less and picking players up when they’re 19-20 when they’re playing well for Gateshead / Macclesfield, then great.

No, please no. We have this in Finland and second level has 4 "B" teams, that don't even want to, and can't, be promoted. Couple years ago one of them was close to getting promotion playoff and said they will participate of course but if they win they won't be promoted [emoji38] What a bs thing to do.

Fuck that.

I’d rather just allow us to loan players to a local lower-league club without as many restrictions. Imagine Gateshead with about 5-6 of our youngsters? It could be the saving grace for our smaller clubs. No wages, young exciting players to draw in the crowds etc.

Issue id still have with that it’s effectively a light touch B team approach.

Rather these players were contracted / paid by those clubs and had the desire to work back up, forge more a connection with the club then a loan.

There’s enough money across the game and places for the top clubs not to hoard everyone, grind down peoples enjoyment for football and they drop out of the game early 20s.

Fuck the multiclub model, it might be OK if you support the team at the top of the food chain but imagine being a fan of one of the subordinates like Girona or Strasbourg knowing your raison d'étre is to be both a holding pen and a landfill for the bigger team. An arrangement where we loan our prospects to a specific club we trust who will give them what they need to make the next step like Chelsea - Arnhem, Man Utd - Royal Antwerp may not be the worst idea though

If we're going for absolutely wild takes in here, how about no reserve teams, no multiclub model, its U21s , and senior squad only.

You've got your squad of 25 players plus U21s and not allowed anymore players on the books, fuck off all the hoarding of players, if you think they aren't going to make it at 21 you release them so they can find their opportunity at other clubs. Also get rid of buy back clauses because its effectively a loan with more steps.

More likely with this route you'd see us using 50 year old Callum Wilson until his legs literally fell off.

Whats the feeling then will we make any signings or stay with what we've got until the summer?

Downie reckons we'll sign a new defender after speaking to Howe today, think he said Howe said they are "seriously" considering it.

Who? Any speculation.

Just think how much we'll have to spend in the summer once we sell Gordon to Arsenal (already have his replacement in Barnes), Tino to Man City (fair enough, can't blame the lad if he gets that opportunity and won't sign a new contract) and Tonali to whoever has tapped him up (already have his replacement in Miley).

I hope we extract top price and act quickly with replacements already scouted and sounded out. Don't expect the sales to go through this month but if we are good sellers we can expect £210m to £240m for the trio.

Being good sellers means absolutely nowt if we're vastly overpaying for average players, though.

I think we’ll bring a defender in annd maybe bring Targett back on loan. Burn isn’t back yet, neither is Krafth, Tino out two months, Schar out 3 months, Botman has had a string of injuries over last 12 months while Hall and Tripper have both had hamstring issues. Any further injuries in defence could seriously jeopardise qualification for Europe and not bringing anyone in would be negligent.
