'I can't believe they've made it': overrated players

Nonsense. And 102 assists certainly says otherwise. He’d walk into any midfield we’ve had in the past 30 years and you know that.

Isn't he chelsea record goalscorer aswell? You don't become that without been good.

Frank Lampard. Sure he was very good goalscorer but the idea that constituted a good midfielder held england back for years...

I’ll join you with that one.  Chelsea’s team was set up to make the most of his strengths and hide his obvious weaknesses.  It’s why he was painfully exposed in an England shirt.

The question was always asked ‘why can’t Lampard and Gerrard play together?’

The answer was - they weren’t intelligent enough to do so, and neither should have been picked ahead of Paul Scholes.

Jordan Ayew’s Palace stats are really poor for a player who starts up front for them as their #9.

20 goals in 199 Premier League appearances for Palace.

A few weeks ago, he was the most fouled player in the PL, so I guess that’s what his role is but still, really poor stats considering nine of those goals were scored in his first season for them five years ago.

Most of them have a lot of skill

It's all on a scale. Eg I just as much can't believe Arbeloa played as many games as he did for Real Madrid, as I can't believe, I dunno, Peter Ramage played plenty of games for Newcastle.

Chamakh - what even was he? A joke he got a move to palace

Sanogo - arsenal obviously played football manager

Salif Diallo - shows the danger of buying after a world cup

Amdy Faye - An absolute turd footballer

Tonev - Dunno what he did after but he was highly rated and produced fuck all.

Ahmed Musa - signed by Leicester because? For a then record signing and was useless

Mikoun - Villa must have been playing football manager.

Cornelius - Was certainly a unit, but monumentally shit

Leacock - Bit harsh but he was a member of that derby side and an absolute liability

Gilberto - Spurs in their less able days. Absolute nothing player.

Corrado Grabbi - Blackburns shearer replacement was beyond shit

Mitrioglu - (Fulham) Highly rated , produced nothing.

Van Wolfswinkel - Another football manager hype train failure

Loads more like Tosun, Gibson, cleverly, mellor

Lots of these are strikers. Guess it's more obvious if you fail there.

Eric Cantona. Brilliant in the PL against Oldham, Ipswich, Mackems etc on the Saturday but totally shite and anonymous on Wednesday nights in the CL against Milan, Barcelona etc. Completely over rated.

Paul Dummett.

Harsh!

limited player but worked hard and done a job. Rated by Rafa.

Also still turning out some good performances (man u away this season)

Actually he’s almost the opposite of this thread. Limited player who’s forged a career for himself through graft.

A great list. Compelling and rich.

IIRC though Musa was actually very good but couldn't get in ahead of Vardy. He just seemed to fade away.

Bellingham?

Of course there are brilliant players who have played for that team. I just thought Sancho thrives on all the space that you get as a strong counter-attacking team in that league. Looks like he doesn’t have the pace or skill to be dangerous in a better league.

Whaaat? I know he’s a thoroughly unlikeable bloke and everyone goes for Scholes, who gets better every year he’s been retired and Gerrard. When doing the English midfielder debate.

But Lampard was a superb player. Got plenty of assists along with his goals.

Seeing Lampard and Chamakh in the same thread is crazy.

TBF, that Chelsea team was built around him to make him look good for *checks notes* 13 years

Berahino and Benteke spring to mind.

Berahino was a funny one. He looked ok until we stuck in that bid for him. He then went to absolute shit.

Shola Ameobi - a striker who played at the highest level and managed 53 league goals in 312 appearances.

Wasn't quick, didn't have great technique, wasn't a clinical finisher, couldn't dribble, wasn't particularly strong or have good links up play, wasn't good in the air, not skillful - no discernable quality which warranted the career he had.

I can't explain this career at all.

Reckon he was one of those players who looked great every day in training, but didn't translate to match days most of the time. On his (very few) good days he could look a world beater, then in the next match would look like he'd never seen a football let alone kicked one.
