The chance for Barnes first half was that, where his ludicrous acceleration over 2-5 yards means opposition can’t track him when he’s coming inside for quick one twos to move the ball.

Indeed. Elanga initiated that move that led to the chance for Barnes with the interchanges he had cutting inside, with Willock, Tonali and then Woltemade. Great bit of play.

I didn't watch him in detail at Forest so I don't know how he had joy before, but I don't know if his impact is going to be by dribbling past people or not. Doesn't seem like he really has that in him, so fans might need to stop asking for it.

He’s done it a good few times since joining. Just the old school knock it down the line and outpace them.

Stuck record here. But Spence is one of

the best 1 v 1 defenders in the league. Apart from lacesgate. I thought he was their best player by a mile.

What would you say to my Forest supporting mate who was absolutely crystal clear in his view that Elanga was outstanding for them last season and he was devasted that they were losing him ?

Doesn't know what he's talking about ?

I was sold on his highlights video. Obviously all highlights videos can make a player look outstanding, but the way he was swerving those deliveries in at pace would be a nightmare to defend.

Tbh, even when he's not playing that well, he looks dangerous. Just his movement and attacking intent with his short passes opens up defences.

He had a big outperformance of his underlying numbers which have always been mid af. Fans get shit wrong all the time.

I much prefer when Elanga moves inside with purpose, rather than direct knock and run down the line.

I said this during the match day thread that he seems wayyyy more effective when doing this so I 100% agree.

Which is strange considering what his strengths as a player are but so far he seems to have more success when doing this for some reason.

Most of the good things he did last night and most of the time I've seen him quite frankly are when it comes inside.

What if his outperformance became his underlying numbers, you know, like through good coaching and more experience, greater confidence, increased maturity.

Or do the stats not allow that.

When I was younger my underlying numbers were to shit in my pants where I stood, if I made it to the toilet it was a big outperformance. Now though, I can shit on the toilet most days.

On his highlights his decision-making looked pretty good as well, just his confidence seems a bit low at the moment and he's not in a flow state when he's playing.

Shame he hasn't adapted instantly but everyone isn't like that.

As soon as he gets out of his own head he'll settle, I figure. Hope he scores vs Wham.

He played two good seasons at Forest, no? Before that he was a bit-part player in Man U reserves.

What are his underlying numbers?

I actually like that he tries to bomb on the outside. It's not been that successful, but if players are scared of that, it makes coming inside now and again far more effective.

Players like Barnes who aren't as effective going outside get shut down because everyone knows he is going to cut in.

Only elite players sustain outperformance. Average players experience mean reversion.

We need to make sure Eddie Howe gets these numbers, this is dynamite - he’ll never made this mistake again.  The numbers were clearly being hidden from him.

I am not concerned at the minute. He seems like a good egg and if Barnes/Gordon/Murphy keep performing, then isn't it great to have him as a 4th choice winger in the league.

It is funny how of all the summer signings, I would have thought this one to be the most risk free, and was sure he would perform. Turns out that the higher risk signings like Thiaw and Woltermade have been the best ones so far.

Why's that even a thing?

What does any of that mean?

Are you Jonah Hill from Moneyball?
