Newcastle United 1-1 Barcelona (10/03/26) | post-match from pg. 43

Brilliant last night. On reflection the most annoying aspect about that game is not the result but the knowledge that we are actually that good when our minds right.

Massive shame we've not been able to be consistent but it should always be a reference point for what we can achieve. That wasn't a fluke performance.

6 wins 3 draws 2 losses in 11 Champions League games is a good record. Can't fault our effort or performance last night. Just a shame we couldn't hang on.

Just look at the time on the clock man. How is that ball being played right through the middle to Olmo at that stage of the game ... why is there such a big gap between the defensive line and the midfield line? Why are there so many gaps to exploit so late in the game holding onto a one goal lead.

This has to get sorted out in this team. Don't know if it means getting in a midfielder with a better sense of defensive positioning. This pass has been happening into that gap for I don't know how many years now! Puts the defenders in a terrible spot every time. Players constantly sneak into that position and punish the team.

Agreed.  Was saying the same at the time. The build up was annoying with players falling over all over the place and at that point in the game that middle should be impenetrable and any attack they should be forced down the sides and then if they hit it in the box you should have numbers to see it out.

One easy through ball straight into our cbs defending in their box can't happen that easy.

I love Tonali but he's more of a reactive athlete rather than a genuine reading the gap, cutting out passing lanes type midfielder. Has happened a few times but I'm not blaming him individually, it's more of a tactic of Howe's to have the flat three in midfield rather than an out and out 6 sitting in deep.

Think there is still a slim chance, if we are clinical and can hit them on the counter with a back to full health Gordon then fingers crossed. Defensively though we will need to be perfect as barca can't be worse than they were last night.

Was odd how they didn't press us at all really, just let Burn and co pass it round the back with zero pressure.

Again, I actually don't see any evident tiredness from the sheer amount of games we've had, James Bunce and his team has worked miracles.

There is mental tiredness there but in terms of gas, we have plenty in the tank.

I don't know how yous can bring yourselves to analyse/think about what led to their goal.

FWIW, I thought Cancelo walking past 3 half arsed challenges was the most offensive part of it all.

But it is hard to criticise individuals or the setup too much. When we had been so good for the 94 minutes prior.

Just a bit of a concern that the late goals and not seeing games out is becoming a recurring theme.

Think after a night's sleep I'm more proud and pleased than I am deflated about the late equaliser.

That may have something to do with conceding so many late goals, and so many times where we have deserved more than we ended up with this season that I think I'm just used to it now

Assuming we lose to Barcelona (not certain by any means), after the Sunderland game, we will have 3 weeks off I think.

Technically 3 weeks off newcastle games, but it's international window so most players won't get a rest

Only two matches in those three weeks and they're friendlies. So it'll pretty much be a rest.

Wissa, Elanga and Tonali have WC playoffs.

Listening to that True Faith podcast is ear aids like. Her fucking whiney voice made all the more grating when she's been on the sauce.

Speaking of whiney voices, we seen that toon YouTube fella, with the male version of Charlotte's drawl, going into Killie Morrisons yesterday.

She looks like she'd have a really hairy, stinky clacker. One for Fak, I reckon.

I’m proud and pleased but still just as fucked off that Gordon whacked the ball back to them for one last attack. Completely braindead, stupid thing to do.

I never listen when anything negative has happened, it's unbearable.

I'm not sure anything that negative happened, tbf. True, them equalizing like that was a gutter but we played really really well. More positive than negative in chateau Groundhog

Any time any of them say the “We’re class” It reminds of me of that scene in the Simpsons when Kennedy and Nixon drink a Duff beer and Homer goes regards Nixon “The man never drank a duff in his life.”

Howe said: “I haven’t seen the goal again and it’s sort of a little bit unclear to me quite what happened. Sometimes you don’t get the fixed picture, so I’d need to see it again before giving you my opinion.

“But certainly as a team, we should have done better. We defended so well for the game, all through the game in different phases.

The goal seemed soft. All I remember is a ball went through the middle of us and it should never happen at that stage of the game."

Moments before he'd waved Burn forward for the free kick when Burn hesitated and looked to the bench, Burn was back in position for the goal but the whole team seemed caught in two minds whether they were pushing for a second or sitting back and defending the lead, that indecision came directly from the Howe.

Haven't you just described Howe being decisive and really have suggested that the players didn't follow his instruction?
