Allardyce - Dyer replacement revealed Thursday

Surprised at how much negative press Smith is getting. The lads a good versatile player who can play in midfield and up top. How many points have we pissed away over the years, especially away from home, as our supposed flair players- Dyer, Solano, Robert, Jenas, Pievert, Emre etc have gone missing and bottled it. Smith gives every game 100%.

Whats more, he's a top pro, never drinks and hardly likely to drag the clubs name through the mud with his off the field antics.

Never heard of the phrase 'jack of all trades, master of none'. Smith is no where near as versatile as Dyer (who can play DM, LM, RM, AM, RWB also CF and RB at a push.

Gives 110% < ability.

Being honest answer these questions:

1) Is Smith better than playing one of Milner, Solano or Zoggy in AM (IF Emre, Barton and Geremi are all injured)??? And is he worth spending £6m to cover this position!

2) Would you rather see Smith play ahead of Carroll (IF Owen, Martins, Viduka and Ameobi are all injured)?

I could understand the argument he's a good squad player if he was on a free or under £1m, but you don't spend £6m on a player to sit on the bench when you appear to be skint and absolutely desperate for practically a whole new defence in an overpriced market!

We can do a LOT better for the sort of money being mentioned is the main point.

Answers (not on a postcard)

1a Dyer could never fucking play anywhere cause he was constantly fucked!

1 He might not be better but (and heres the key fact) he's different. He's not Zoggy, Emre or Barton.

2 Err...... yes at the minute I would. Two years time maybe not.

Give the lad a chance and have a bit more faith in Sam ffs.

Im pretty shocked by some of the shite on here tonight. Big Sam is building a squad. He will want players with different attributes to play in different games. Bringing Smith in gives us different options, especially away from home. He is a better manager than we have had recently. He looks at the big picture and isn't so stupid to think that every single signing has to improve our best 11. He will pick different players in different formations against different teams. Smith will fit into one of these systems, proberbly in games away from home and against some of the better sides at home.

The days of 442, pick your best 11 are long gone. It will change game by game, and Smith will be an important player.

If a player of Smith's quality becomes genuinely important to us, we are going to be struggling with the whole "top 10" thing.

Someone should tell Premiership Champions Manchester United about that.

That the same Premiership Champions Manchester United that are selling him because he isnt good enough?

The same Premiership Champions that sold Ruud Van Nistlerooy and David Beckham.

Yep Smith is definitely on par with those 2

Where did I say he was?

All I was pointing out is that Manchester United sell good players as well as shit one.

Jesus, some people on here are acting as if we're re-signing Titus.

Smiths a canny player, even if not one of our priorities.

Do you think we can attract squad players that ARE good enough to play for Man United like?

Nope, I don't think we are in a position to be signing players in positions we are already well stocked in either.

- Problems over signings have been the lack of European football - the quality of player he's been looking at wanted Europe and could get it elsewhere

Although I buy that, I have a different take on things after all we always sign the midfielders/strikers we want.

I reckon our joke defence actually puts off defensive signings - joining could easily make a player part of a joke defence, destroying his career. Thus to get better defenders, we may need to first show in this forthcoming season that we are better defensively.

Would be sorely disappointed if we spend 6M on Smith. Don't rate him as a striker or midfielder.

My mam is well excited though. She's always telling me that's Smith's a "proper grafter". Silly cow

It incomprehensible that we'll potentially start this season with a threadbare defence, yet spend so much money on an overrated, underachieving waste of space.

I give up.  Honestly, the manager has defensive targets identified and he's replacing a midfielder/attacker that he's sold.  I just think it's so much the common sense thing to do, and yet it's completely beyond the grasp of some of you.

And for the people saying "he's a good squad player", etc.

There's no f*cking way Smith would agree to come here if it's to be a squad member when he's been that for practically his whole career anyway at Leeds & Man Utd (barring the season Leeds went down) to be simply a squad member. Sam will have given him first-team assurances. It's a shocking transfer man.

Its Smith by the way

Hope its Appiah

Im thinking the same!def going to be Smith.Wouldnt be a bad signing.Get rid of a selfish prick who only gives a shit abt himself and get a guy who would shoot himself in the head for his team!Would love to see us get Appiah but dont think so,looking like Smith!

If it is Smith I think he'll prove to be a valuable addition to the squad.

Surprised at the amount of negativity from some people which seems more prejudice than reason. Doubt you'll see Smiths head dropping in a game and starting to walk dejectedly round the pitch like Dyer did on occasion. Nor will he fall asleep on the goal line defending a corner.

I'm sure he will contribute more to the team results over a season than Dyer ever did.

Struggling to see to the positives in this one. I suppose with Smith and Barton in the team we'll have some real grit away from home, if nothing else. Spending £6m on an attacking player we're not really desperate for also suggests substantial funds have already been put aside to strengthen defence, although i think i said similar when we signed Duff...

I think we do need another central midfielder and it's not at all the fact that he's not a defender that I have a problem with, simply that he's a poor player for a ridiculous fee. Poor in midfield, poor in attack, the mackems got a better deal on Richardson imo - at least he's got a few things in his locker other than being able to kick people.

we already have "target men" in ameobi and viduka, so we don't need another, especially with Carroll waiting in the wings. we do need an extra body to cover for the wide forward positions in a 4-3-3, but i think smith would be crap in that position. bolton under sam used stelios, anelka and diouf in these positions and all three are fast, skilful and agile. smith is none of these things.

as for smith playing in midfield, he's worse than all the current first-team options we have there - emre, barton, butt, geremi. so the only thing he adds is another number to the squad and if we wanted to do that we could've spent a pittance and still probably got a better player in, someone who naturally plays there. we could do with another specialist DM to support Butt, but smith's not a specialist DM as he can't read the game and distribute well enough. despite this he is feted for his guts, aggression and bizzarely his god-awful tackling. he's not an attacking midfielder cos he has no vision, no pace, little skill and doesn't even offer end product when played there. sounds like a poor man's scott parker and scott parker is crap.

as for what we have lost with Dyer's departure, it's his ability to inject pace into the the number of attacking positions he can play in and signing smith does not replace this. we're worse off without this and west ham with bellamy and dyer in their side will be a better team for it.

NO:  Smith?!  What about the fucking defence?!

Me:  Oh don't worry about that!  I've just seen Allardyce on the telly there and he's still gonna sign defenders.  He's got some in mind and everything.

NO:  But the DEFENCE!

Me:  Yeah, I'm saying, he knows who he's after and he's got the money.  Not a problem.

NO:  You're not listening.  THE DEFENCE.

Me:  What about them?

NO:  We need to sign some defenders!

Me:  Ok, is there something wrong with you?

NO:  Gimme a D....*D*.....Gimme an E....

Me:  Fuck off.

I give up how some people fail to see that 5 defenders of any real quality wont be enough. The fact the manager has chosen to spend this extra £6m on a position(s) where a lot of us think we are well stocked in and think it could be better spent else where, I don't see how that is so hard to grasp?

Ok he didn't expect to lose Dyer, so he didn't expect to have another £6m (or whatever it is in the transfer kitty) does that mean the money MUST be spent on another midfielder/attacker or is it just madness to think this money could go towards improving the weakest area he has already set a budget for? I am pretty sure Allardyce isn't really sitting there thinking 2 or 3 players is exactly what we need to make sure the defence is fully covered. I hope not anyway!
