My interest in the national team has definitely spiked with our players getting called up more. Article in the Athletic had a few damning stats. In the Mike Ashley era only four players won an England cap whilst playing for Newcastle. Owen, Smith, Carroll and Townsend. Townsend was the last of those (2016 vs Oz at the SoL) until Trippier got called up in ‘22. Until Pope, Trips and Wilson were called up for a Newcastle player hadn’t went to a major tournament with England since 2006 (Owen). The only academy graduates to get a cap in the Premier League era whilst at the club are Howey and Carroll. Now we have Trips, Pope, Hall, Livramento, Wilson and Gordon all win caps playing here since the takeover.
