Mike Ashley

Bit weird how the only English clubs under Chinese ownership are Birmingham, Villa, West Brom and Wolves.

I dunno what to make of this. Ashley has been terrible for basically the entirety of his time here; he's a thoroughly dislikable person and has treated with contempt those who really make make the club exist. If it wasn't for the miracle of last March, the club would be rudderless to the point of sinking by now imo. The present manager has changed everything by being a wonderful and talented human being, who treats the club with the respect it deserves. Ashley doesn't deserve him but the club does.

So I wouldn't be averse to a change by any stretch, it literally all just depends on Rafa. If he's happy - I'm happy. It doesn't matter who's at the head of the whole operation as long as Rafa retains the same amount of control, because he is the club now.

To be frank, today's reports have made me nervous.

Owners can't 'do a Chelsea/Man City' anymore can they? Financial fair play and all that (unless they sponsor the new shirt arm badge sponsor spot for £500m a season).

They can certainly up our budget a couple of times over, just not as unlimited as Chelsea and Man City's were when they started out.  As you say they could artificially inflate sponsorship (as long as its not completely astronomical it'll get past the Premier League) and extend it to other aspects like the stadium to make the deal seem more realistic.  Think theirs also a buffer to allow some losses without punishment (?).

Also like someone said earlier in the thread more money spent and more success will in turn bring in more cash.

someone "investing" makes the least sense of everything to me like, how does that even work do they pay £100m for a quarter of the club if he values it at £400m...

if so what happens to the cash, surely ashley wouldn't plough that all into the squad?

Can someone paste the article please

Mike Ashley, the Newcastle United owner, told manager Rafael Benítez that he had been approached by consortiums looking to buy the club when they met last month.

Telegraph Sport understands that conversations with investors are ongoing and that Ashley is more open to selling a share of the business, as he does not believe anyone is willing to match the £400 million asking price needed to complete a full takeover.

Ashley is still considering the various offers that have been made, but will want proof of funds before he enters into serious discussions and is wary of time wasters.

Telegraph Sport revealed last year that Chinese investors had shown an interest in buying the club and that has not gone away. Renewed attempts have been made since the club were promoted back to the Premier League in May and it has been enough to tempt Ashley to do some sort of deal.

A source close to the discussions said: “There has been interest from China for a long time now. It has not got very far in the past, but neither has it gone away.”

Benítez is well aware of the situation and is said to be relaxed about the negotiations as he has been assured they will have no impact on his ability to sign players this summer.

In fact, if the additional investment is brought in by Ashley in the next few weeks, it could even boost his spending power over the next two transfer windows.

The fact that Ashley told Benítez about the interest at the end of last season, when he assured him he would be given the financial backing he needs to rebuild the squad this summer, suggests the sport shop billionaire is taking the approaches more seriously than before.

Ashley issued a statement three years ago insisting he would not sell “for any price”. He added that he would only part company with a club he bought for around £180 million in 2007 if they won a major trophy or qualified for the Champions League.

However, the amount of interest shown in Newcastle – which has come from several foreign consortiums – has turned Ashey’s head.

In turn, Telegraph Sport understands he would be happy to share the responsibility of running the club, in return for the sort of significant investment that would greatly strengthen their player recruitment power.

According to that article that is exactly what would happen.

Makes the comments Ashley made post-season more interesting...

“I’ve confirmed to Rafa and Lee that they can have every last penny that the club generates through promotion, player sales and other means in order to build for next season.”

 Good point that.

Presume some sort of deal where Ashley agrees to sell a share of the club on the condition of £xM being invested into the business. No way he sells shares in the club and doesn't pocket the money.

This seems a pretty big deal, if it were to actually happen. Some Billionaire investment alongside what ever the club makes could really give Rafa the financial power he needs to make us competitive over the long haul.

That's assuming it happens of course.

It must be at an advanced stage if it's out in the open. Expect a club statement in the morning if it's bullshit

Depends where Charnley is at because they had to wait until he was out of jail to report on him being in jail.

Very weary about this. Consortiums are usually only in it to make money, you may get lucky finding 1 or 2 businessmen who want a rich play thing, like Chelsea and Man City did, however a group of them coming together to do it? That means it's unlikely that we will see money thrown our way, more likely that money will be taken out of the club, money which Rafa has been promised and given control of.

You then have to wonder if the figurehead behind it becomes another idiot who can't keep his mouth shut like Villa's owner, or even worse someone who wants to change the colours of the home shirt, or name like the owners of Cardiff and Hull respectively. Even worse we could get a Venkey's like owner who is happy to take whatever money the club has, not invest and sit and watch as the club falls through the leagues.

For every dream scenario there is, there is a nightmare scenario.

If he knows about it then that's ok. If not then you'll hear about it soon enough.

Rafa has made his money. He doesn't need to deal with bollocks. He can walk away any time.

If he's calm and happy.. then it means good things.

I suppose it puts a different perspective on his quote from the recent interview where he talked about winning something.

It's bad timing, but that's all really. I'm still very apprehensive, despite wanting rid of Ashley.

The share thing sounds like a mare waiting to happen. Can't imagine two huge, rich egos forming something that won't end up in a crazed fallout. Remember, MA is like bull in a china shop. He's full arse-hole.

Agree with this.  Mike couldn't share a tub of ice cream let alone a football club.  The whole thing would be a disaster.
