FWIW, I would do away with the referee having any powers to check anything and that it should only be the VAR panel that can inform the ref when a decision has been missed, in exactly the same way that the assistant ref or fourth official would.

The referee has the final say so you have contradicted yourself. An assistant or 4th official can make them aware of something however the referee is ultimately the person in charge

There's no contradiction at all because only a completely ignorant, pig-headed ref would overrule 4 other refs who have the benefit of every angle and replay after replay. Refs already make decisions on the basis of linesmen and fourth officials having a better view, this would be no different.

Something like challenge flags, and mandatory reviews in the last x minutes of a half.

Having said all that, it's clearly not working and not going to work because they're not using it correctly at all, and the perception of what's a 'clear and obvious' mistake is arbitrary (even though personally I think it's easy to understand)

Shearer was kicking off there saying that it was a clear and obvious penalty. I disagree, I think it COULD be a penalty, but it's not stonewall in the slightest.

Have to say last nights referee was great. He never bowed down to the big names, he never fell for the diving (earning the right to go down), not only that but he got the 50/50's right as well. After the first sending off he could easily have been lenient towards Chelsea, as lot of referee's do, but he then went and booked Costa for another dive and wasted no time in stamping his authority on the game by immediately sending him off because of his reaction. It is only when we have referee's like this and doing against the big boys like last night is real change going to occur. People say VAR will help, well no, because if it's still being seen by the referee's we see who get into bed with the big clubs and those on TV who back his mate despite it being the wrong decision, then nothing will change at all. Only training and employing professional referee's from the grass routes is going to make a difference, and at the moment refereeing in this country is a case of 'jobs for the boys'.

I liked it when he booked Tore Andre Flo.

  • 2 weeks later...

Sounds like VAR was a right laugh in Serie  A over the weekend. Check out the goal Crotone had disallowed for offside in injury time. Flag up, checks the replay, miles onside, disallows it anyway.

There were also three games where the referee didn't use the video when he should have, and another where the TV company didn't show him the correct images so he got the decision wrong.

The refereeing decisions against us is really starting to get on my tit now, not that it hasn`t but its going up a level now. Said to a friend last week we need to go into to every game with the mind set of already being 1-0 down before a ball is kicked.  Its not just the referees its the everything that should be 50/50 is never 50/50. Deflections, second balls, rebounds, world class saves, world class shots....

It was a clear foul, it's just annoying because it's very rare that they're actually given.

This.  They aren't given enough, should be zero tolerance towards shirt pulling.

But it'd be soo many penalties; we can't ruin a game like that, can we? Just Newcastle's.

Sky asking "What would VAR make of that?". If we stop the game every time we think there has been a shirt pull, we may aswell start watching a golf.

We'll probably just get fucked even more with VAR.   There's no guarantee it will be used consistently.

They'd probably replay it and send Clark off just for laughs. Then review one of the many set piece shirt pulls when we're on attack and send our man off for daring to wear a shirt.
