WATFORD have turned down Newcastle United's initial offer for Adrian Mariappa.

The Magpies are believed to have bid in the region of £2million for the 25-year-old.

However, the Herfordshire outfit are holding out for more, and have placed a much higher valuation on the centre-back.

Probably the end of it then.

It was somewhat tongue in cheek

Ideally, we would amend the tactics and just not leave Colo and Williamson on the halfway line against quick strikers.

That's what I was getting at really. If it turns out our defence is being destroyed by pace, could bring on Mariappa for Willo to combat the threat more effectively.

If we do sign Mariappa, I'd still like Coloccini and Wililamson to be our first choice CBs though.

Can see us slightly upping our bid (an extra 500k possibly), if that doesn't do it (or Watford are really insisting that our bid should be £5million), have to look elsewhere I guess. Lewis Dunk has also been mentioned in the Chronicle today like.

Would have thought a top tier CD was in order, not wanting to squander our league position.

Doesn't seem to be much value.

I mean, Carr has a great scouting record, but bargain CBs are probably the hardest find I can think of - diamond-in-the-rough strikers are everywhere, same with full-backs, wingers and CMs, but CBs are difficult buys. If they're established, they're very expensive (and the supply side is slacking far behind the demand). If they're promising, they're young and dropping the odd clanger and no one in football has the patience for them.

Going abroad is probably tricky in this respect too. Asking CBs to adapt to the Premier League while facing Aguero and RVP one week, then getting seven bells knocked out of you at Stoke, then chasing after fucking Odemwingie  Tough transition.

Good post mate.

Part of it is that they mature late.

Prefer Dunk tbh, ton of potential. Certainly don't think he is ready to walk straight into our side though. Mariappa will give us something different, no idea if that will be a good or bad thing though. Much more experienced than Dunk and slightly less of a liability in the very short term.

Isn't Dunk allegedly a sex offender?

On bail until 21st March.

Five Brighton and Hove Albion players bailed in sex assault case

The son of a Premier League manager and two first team regulars were among five Brighton and Hove Albion players questioned over an alleged sex assault.

Anton Rodgers, 18, whose father is Swansea City manager Brendan Rodgers, Tommy Elphick, 24, and Lewis Dunk, 20, were arrested and bailed on Thursday.

First team squad members George Barker, 20, and Ben Sampayo, 19, were also questioned about the alleged attack.

They have been released on bail until 21 March, pending further inquiries.

Former Seagulls player Steve Cook, 20, who was signed by AFC Bournemouth for an undisclosed fee at the beginning of January, was also arrested and released on bail by police investigating allegations of a sexual assault, in July.

The Brighton and Hove Albion players were questioned the day after the Championship club, managed by Gus Poyet, beat non-league Wrexham in an FA Cup third round replay.

A spokesman for Brighton confirmed five men associated with the club were assisting police with an investigation on Thursday.

On Friday, the club said it would be making no further comment.

Bournemouth said an unnamed player was assisting police.

A spokesman for Sussex Police said: "Six men arrested in Brighton and Bournemouth on Thursday morning, January 19, on suspicion of sexual assault have been questioned and bailed.

"The men, aged 18, 19, two aged 20 and a 24-year-old, all from Brighton, and a 20-year-old from Bournemouth have all been bailed until March 21."

If Wattford want 5 million we should be looking elsewhere.

Not an expert on their finances but I doubt they want that much, GG said at least £2.5m. They were never going to accept the first offer with over a week left of the window and them knowing we increased offer for Tomkins.

You know I don't think these lowball bids are just a cheeky way of providing the illusion "we tried", they're just how those jerks operate.  Always going to be haggling.

and that's bad?

It can be as it could curtail negotiations before they get started if the opening bid is low enough to be considered derisory. But in general no.

fk off skirge

(insert winkyface)

Soz if you've already posted, is he any good?

Nah he's shit, you wouldn't want him.

Quick, not tall, good positioning, good jump for his height, ball-playing defender, been very very solid defensively for 18 months or so since being given a regular run at centre-back (having played at full-back for a fair amount of time beforehand). Not sure he'd be first choice and the lack of height and being in a very poor side makes it difficult to stand out, but he has - not sure if he'd be better than Williamson/Saylor based on him being a completely different type of player to Williamson and Saylor's early season form being great. Could still do a job for you and would work his socks off for 'the cause'. Also has a good (read: terrible) song.
