There's a thread on the RTG site about free school tickets which confirms they are dishing them out as far north as Edinburgh.

Is there no geographic limit to their desperation ?

Have they completely lost any remaining dignity they had ?

They've been practically forcing them and unsuspecting Chinese men and women at the university all season.

It's the remaining few who still pay for entry that I feel sorry for.

On the subject of Europe, and ever desperate to be loved (or even noticed) by anyone outside sunderland, they perennially spout this billy bullshit about SAFC fans founding Athletic Bilbao, then try to drum up some modern-day camaraderie with them. Until someone posts YT footage of us actually enjoying such camaraderie with the very same team...

http://www.readytogo.net/smb/showthread.php?t=692860

So to summarise…

How NUFC forge a relationship with a foreign team: Play them in a competitive tie in a respected European competition, accumulating 6 goals in two displays of exciting, attacking football, while the fans mix in a trouble-free festival atmosphere.

How SAFC forge a relationship with a foreign team: invent a massive fucking lie.

Erm, it's not really a lie. A few mackems did actually play a part in forming Athletic Bilbao.

Not according to the club they didn't...

"One reason for being contacted was that an official approach from Sunderland AFC had left the Bilbao Club's Directors non plussed as to their links with our famous red and white stripes. In short they'd never heard of us!"

The reason Bilbao play in Red and White is that they came to England to buy a set of kit. They were supposed to buy a set of Black and White stripes from Notts County but the deal couldn't be agreed and they ended up desperate so bought a set of Red and White ones on the way home, from Southampton.

Aye, they were Southampton shirts iirc, don't know if they jabber on about their links like the inbreds do.

EDIT: D'oh! Too slow again!

Bilbao adopting the red and white stripes had nothing to do with the mackems, aye but a few mackems did play a part in introducing football to Bilbao (from what I've read anyway).

Their official website doesn't mention it

http://www.athletic-club.net/web/main.asp?a=2&b=3&c=0&d=0&idi=2

Their wiki pages don't either

http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Athletic_Bilbao

http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Historia_del_Athletic_Club

Sounds to me like some retro-fit history re-write based on little more than the shirt patterns. I can believe south-coast british emigrants ending up in Northern Spain in the 19th century. But from the far NE? Nah, don't see it.

Besides they would have been loving life on wearside, enjoying their most successful period in the modern game.

Hmmm, did a bit more googling and yeah, it actually looks like this is the case. My bad.

Bumped re Bilbao. Having watched Athletic versus Man U and Schalke recently I'd say red and white stripes are the only thing the two reams have in common.

Not sure macums actually had anything to do with the origins of Athletic although the story about a shipyard worker lending them a set of R & W strips does have some credibility.

I can think of no Spanish club more like Newcastle than Athletic and the two cities have a lot in common too. Proud people who embrace a regional identity, similar industrial backgrounds and stunning riverside centres - they even have a Millenium Bridge just like ours. Impressive city centres with great atmospheric bars and restaurants, stadiums with a central "cathedral" like feel and football clubs which are at the heart of the region and local culture. Athletic fans still talk very fondly of the games they played against NUFC.

I'd struggle to think of any Spanish city which had anything in common with Sunderland, La Linea next to Gibraltar possibly as it has a rather "crimial frontier outpost" feel about it , but apart from that I think Albania may be a better place to compare it to.
