It's taken a few years, but Mike Ashley and his band of horrendous men have taken the joy out if this for me. And they'd be proud of that, no doubt, so credit to them I suppose.

:nods: Watching the games is really like it was when the Knicks were terrible. Putting the game on is just something that you do.

Shak is fortunate he has other sports/interests - as am I for that matter, imagine having just Newcastle Utd, like the kid who paints his face every game (and probably everyday).

The poor wretched bastards.

I shouted myself hoarse at Wembley on Sunday and was on the edge of my seat as the Steelers drove down field in the last two minutes. I was filled with anguish that Roethlisberger would find a man open in the end zone, go for two and win the game. The relief when he fumbled was akin to the feeling Shak described, when Shola bundled in the equaliser against the Mackems. I didn't even watch last night, I had a load of chores to do at home so did then while watching breaking bad on Netflix.

:okay:

tbf, I do get to support every team that plays Sunderland, so I get a fair share of wins- being a small time north easterner. also get to cheer every time Altidore gets kicked up a height.

Contrary to many on here i also tend to support English teams when in europe- it all helps dilute the despair.

Demoralising.

Found a pub to watch the game yesterday but watched the whole thing without getting animated even once. Might as well have been Hull v Southampton. Realised when Remy scored that I don't care anymore. Yeah I was hoping we'd get an equaliser, but even if we had I wouldn't have been jumping for joy. It was the same when Hull scored their third goal last week, my reaction was literally "Wow, nice goal."

Five years ago, hell even last year, I'd have been livid when that went in. Yelling at the TV, calling anyone within earshot a cunt, all of that irrational, emotional shit that makes sports worth watching.

I compare it with how I feel watching my NFL team, and honestly it's two completely different experiences. I still get mad, still jump for joy when we score a TD or make a big play.

Before one of my fellow NFL fans comes in and says "Yeah, well that's because your team are really good right now" I'm saying, hand on heart, that that's not it. I'd still care, even if they were struggling.

Why?

Because when I look at that team I see an organisation that is dedicated to being the best they can be, to giving me and the rest of their fan base their very best effort, every year, to winning.

Newcastle United?

I look at the club and see it being run by a bunch of odious cunts who treat their fans with utter disdain, who cut every corner to save every penny they can at the expense of being as good a football team as is possible. And it breaks my heart, it really does.

Newcastle was my first love, this should mean more to me than any other sport ever could. I still remember the absolute joy I felt when we beat Man U 5-0, the absolute agony I felt when Collymore closed in, how I lay in my room in tears when Graham Fenton stole the title away from us, how I lept around a PC lab in uni like a lunatic when Bellamy scored in Feyenoord. Even as recently as a year and a bit ago, chainsmoking my way through a horrible derby game against Sunderland in a dodgy little bar in Vietnam, then absolutely exploding when Shola bundled in an equaliser.

How can I care anymore though? We have an owner whose only goal is to advertise his other business, a director of football who belongs in a fucking cemetery, a manager who is delighted to go along with this rubbish while endeavouring to play as tedious a brand of football as is achievable, and a group of players who don't appear to give a single fuck about the badge on their shirt (one or two exceptions aside).

I doubt I'll ever be able to fully detach myself from NUFC, there's too much history there between us. But right now, I'm just so deflated by the whole experience of following this club. Barely post in the football forum anymore, gonna be home for a few months soon but have so many other things I'd rather spend money on than taking a trip over to watch us. I haven't been in St. James' Park in years, honestly don't know if I want to see in the flesh with all of Ashley's shit splattered across it.

Sums me up too man. It's shocking how little I react to goals etc when we're playing now. Just falling out of love with football in general mainly because of NUFC.

It's not about us winning or losing either. It's the fact that everything good about the club is being killed off and everything we're proud of is disappearing and there's nothing we can do about it. Ashley couldn't care less. He's ruining the club and he's going nowhere any time soon.

Yep, that probably sums me up pretty well. Feel awful about the whole situation though, which is kind of a relief I guess. Reassuring to know that I do still care, cos I couldn't imagine my life without supporting Newcastle.

For example, I was immensely proud of Team GB and thoroughly enjoyed the Olympics. Then I was chuffed when Murray won Wimbledon. But the feeling still didn't come close to a really good Newcastle victory. The emotions surrounding my affection for Newcastle still outweigh any other sporting achievement or disappointment. That is reassuring for me.

There is a very good shout that Newcastle United means just as much to me if not more than the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (my home town, 1.5 hour drive away, 20+ years supporting NFL football team).

So our current state, absolutely bothers me and its not that I don't care - I wish at times it didn't bother me as much as it does - but currently I'm at a loss for what is happening to us by the man who owns this club, the way he runs this club, the people he has hired in positions at this club, and the culture that he's destroying(ed)

You can easily see the difference between a bad team with a plan, and an organization that doesn't give a shit. It's not great supporting a bad team, but it's easier when you can see that there is a plan in place, and people capable of seeing it through. I don't think that's happening here.

Yep, 100%. I know my Tampa teams all have good ownership doing what they can (within their means, be it extravagant or not) and the plan is to build a winning culture within the organization to build a winning team(s) be it through shrewd scouting, recruitment, winning now, draft, etc. - the plan is all there for those teams, it may not be working right now but there is a plan.

For Newcastle it's the opposite.  The goal for a sporting organization is the trophy cabinet right (for the most part) the key measures of success are trophies and/or titles and our owner's only care is doing the bare minimum to maintain premier league status is a disgrace.  Our plan isn't even the stated top 10 goal that does its rounds, there isn't a plan. There's only an end result they care about, no relegation. Sickening.
