Newcastle are closing in on the £9million signing of Dutch striker Bas Dost.

The 26-year-old, who scored 16 goals in the Bundesliga for Wolfsburg last season, is ready to sign a four-year deal.

Bost scored 19 goals in all competitions last term, including an astonishing run of 14 goals in just nine games, four of them in a 5-4 win over Leverkusen.

He also scored in their German Cup Final win against Dortmund.

The 6ft 5in striker has two caps for the Netherlands, both won in March.

So 14 goals in 9, which means 5 in the other 27 (wiki says he played 36 games). That was a James Beattie-esque run of form

Averaged a goal every 125 mins on the field last season - http://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/bas-dost/leistungsdaten/spieler/56331

Scored a few when Twente won the league under McClaren too.

Fair enough, sounds better when put like that

I don't understand why he'd leave to join us when Wolfsburg are in the Champions League and he's been first choice striker all season. Unless he's worried they're going to sign a few strikers this summer and he wants to be in the Dutch Euro 2016 squad so has to play regularly

Apparently they want Mandzukic so that's definitely possible.

Reckon they've probably seen him for what he is, fairly limited and want to upgrade now they're in the CL and have more cash to spend.

Must be very confident of bringing in at least two good quality strikers in then as their next option is Bendtner

Sure I read Mandzuckic was going to Juventus

Wolfsburg have wanted shot for a while. He's your typical big man forward, looked like an absolute bull in a China shop for  large parts of the season but a purple patch circa January/February time make his stats look respectable.

If true, why has Graham Carr fallen for this? Putting it politely, Dost's not very good.

Let's be honest even if Carr doesn't rate him, it doesn't make a blind bit of difference to whether we buy him or not.

For sure. If given the choice between Austin for £15mil or Dost for £9mil, who do you think Charnley would go for? You're absolutely right, the answer is Kenwyne Jones for £3mil.
