We've clearly taken a step back. Not that it would have made a difference.

Good signing for them. Shane long please?

Nah I'd pass on Shane Long. One of those players that accumulates massive transfer fees but never really delivers anywhere

other than against us?

Everyone plays well against us

QPR turning down £12m in the summer, now they're going to get £4m six months later , said this kind of thing would happen.  We should definitely be in their at that price though.

they would have been banking on him bringing them back up.

Wow, didn't even know this was on the cards. Will be interesting to see how he does straight away. Southampton have done well. Not having the best of seasons but acting before things get too desperate.

done what we should have done in the summer, securing someone who scores goals rather than gambling on players who've never played in the league. We should have been in for him, I do wonder if he wasn't willing to come. (He may well have been in Summer when he didn't know what a shambles we'd be)

I know he's out of contract in the summer but £4m is remarkably cheap in this market. If we weren't willing to better that then I can only assume there's something wrong with him physically that we're not willing to gamble on.

I think we've missed out on Austin and for £4 million he could have been a huge bargain.

Pathetic if we've missed out on him for that amount

What if he didnt want to come here? Dare say he had a choice in it

NUFC only missed out on Charlie Austin if he would have even entertained the idea of coming here. Rumours were he wanted to stay down South (or at least his wife supposedly did).

£4m is a bargain. This deal was done quietly. If Charlie Austin was interested in going elsewhere his agent would have leaked the fact a £4m fee would secure him to generate interest from other clubs.

If it's a case he wanted to stay south/go home, then I'm pleased he's went to these and not Palace. Interesting to see how he does actually.

I remember when Rob Lee didn't sign for Boro because he didn't want to move so far away from London, he signed for us instead.

Exactly the same situation

"As soon as Southampton showed an interest that was the one club I wanted to go to," said Austin, who was linked with a move to Newcastle last summer.

"You see the progression from when I was playing against Southampton for Swindon. For me, it was important to come to a club that's on the up and that's what I've got here."
