I don't see how tbh. People aren't going to come to Sunderland because some committee said it's the capital of culture this year, beating the likes of Stoke and Swansea. There is nothing there a medium sized town can't offer and probably do a lot better due to location. It also seems like they are forever trying to win this and failing, surely it's costing a lot of money which could ha e been spent elsewhere. Again just like their football fans they are desperate for some recognition from outsiders, that they matter, that they focus on this rather than actually trying to create new culture and win it by simply making a difference to the UK. I was kind of hoping they'd win, as it would have be good for Newcastle.....but then I remembered the utter jubilation on RTG when we lost the City of Culture bid to Liverpool. More karma.
