A lot of Newcastle fans will work in the Sunderland area and would have benifitted from the higer profile of Sunderland.

I don't see how tbh. People aren't going to come to Sunderland because some committee said it's the capital of culture this year, beating the likes of Stoke and Swansea. There is nothing there a medium sized town can't offer and probably do a lot better due to location.

It also seems like they are forever trying to win this and failing, surely it's costing a lot of money which could ha e been spent elsewhere. Again just like their football fans they are desperate for some recognition from outsiders, that they matter, that they focus on this rather than actually trying to create new culture and win it by simply making a difference to the UK.

Coventry

Couldn’t have went any better.

Sweet.

I was kind of hoping they'd win, as it would have be good for Newcastle.....but then I remembered the utter jubilation on RTG when we lost the City of Culture bid to Liverpool.

More karma.

I had forgotten about that!

Why do they hate Jimmy Hill again?!

“f*** OFF YA BIG CHINNED c***.”

He personally relegated Sunderland AFC in the late seventies despite not kicking a ball by the cunning plan of finishing his game ten minutes later than the Wearsiders. Sunderland lost 2-0 where his team Coventry drew with Bristol City. If Sunderland had've won they'd have stayed up regardless. Proof that he did indeed personally relegate them.

Not as simple as that. He asked for the match to have a delayed KO because of trouble that Coventry fans had getting to the game. It was delayed by 15 minutes. The Sunderland game could have and should have been delayed, or at least the 2nd half should have been. Coventry and Bristol City were drawing 2-2 when the Sunderland game finished. A draw was the only result that would have sent Sunderland down, Both Coventry and Bristol would have sent the other team down instead of Sunderland had they won. Coventry played out the final 15 minutes by playing it across the back (It’s also said that Bristol didn’t attempt to gain the ball off them). It was investigated by the FA, however Jimmy Hill happened to be on the FA board as well and refused to sit out of the investigation.

Absolutely loving Hill’s performance there. Great heel work

You mean face surely? Sunderland are always the heels.

True, but he's getting the cheap heat like a pro

Like the heart foundation circa 97. Hated in America. Loved everywhere else.
