Newcastle United on TV in the Championship: How to watch them - and when games will be

16:00, 28 May 2016

By Chris Waugh

The Championship may not be broadcast as frequently as the Premier League, but Newcastle United will still be on TV next season

Newcastle United are no longer a Premier League side but at least some of the Magpies’ matches will be broadcast live on television and radio in 2016-17.

True the Championship, and the Football League in general, is not broadcast anywhere near as extensively as the Premier League, but there will still be 148 games shown across the English second, third and fourth tiers next season.

Rafa Benitez’s Magpies will certainly be one of the prime attractions as well given that the Spaniard is a world-renowned manager who was standing in the dugout at the Bernabeu as recently as January.

But who will show the games? Which radio station will you be able to listen to? When are the live-broadcast timeslots? And will you be able to watch Newcastle live if you don’t live in the UK?

Here’s the extensive guide to all those live broadcasting questions and much more:

Can I watch Newcastle live on TV in the Championship next season?

The Magpies may have be missing out on the exorbitant Premier League TV revenue deal, but they will still be on the box next season.

Sky Sports owns all the right to Football League matches for the 2016-17 campaign - and 92 Championship matches will be screened in all, including the play-offs.

What’s more, second-tier sides are guaranteed a minimum of two home matches to be broadcast live - so at the very least Newcastle will be on live on Sky Sports twice next season, though they will likely be shown far more frequently.

When are the main slots for Championship football shown?

There are three ‘main’ Sky Sports time slots for Championship football during which games are shown most which, and there are also two ‘secondary’ slots which are added in every now and again.

The main slots are:

- Friday, 7.45pm

- Saturday, 5.30pm

- Sunday, 12.00pm

The secondary slots are:

- Thursday, 7.45pm

- Monday, 7.45pm

What’s more, during the festive period,

What’s more, during the festive period, on bank-holiday weekends and when there are midweek fixtures, games can be shown on different days and in alternative timeslots.

When are time changes announced for matches?

The original fixture list for the Championship campaign will be released on June 22, but then it will change over the course of the season due to games being selected for live broadcast.

Initial TV selections for August and September will occur late-June/early-July.

Then, throughout the course of the campaign, games are usually selected to be shown live around six weeks in advance.

However, sometimes matches are changed at short notice - with Leeds United only informed a few days before their games for a couple of time alterations throughout the course of this season.

What about a highlights show? Is there a Football League version of MOTD?

There is - and you can catch it either on terrestrial or paid-for TV.

Sky Sports shows highlights of the Football League on a Saturday evening, as well as on a Sunday morning and at regular slots during the week.

Also, Channel 5 air all the goals from 9pm on a Saturday night (or during the week if there are mid-week fixtures) on ‘Football League Tonight’.

The FA Cup and Capital One Cup are on TV too, aren’t they?

They are indeed.

BT Sport (25 matches) and the BBC (16 games) split the FA Cup coverage, so you can even watch that competition on terrestrial TV if the Magpies turn their woeful recent record around under Benitez.

There’s also a highlights programme on the BBC after every round.

In terms of the Capital One Cup, Sky Sports show 15 matches a season live.

Both Sky Sports and Channel 5 also provide highlights of each round.

How many times were Newcastle on TV last season in the Premier League?

The Magpies were on TV on 16 occasions in the Premier League throughout 2015-16.

In fact, only seven sides were televised more frequently than Newcastle.

What about individual Championship sides? How many times were they on live?

Leeds United and Derby County were shown live on TV 15 times each, and the top Championship sides tends to be screened on 10 occasions or more.

Newcastle with Benitez at the helm will likely reach those sorts of figures for games broadcast live.

What about if I want to listen to Newcastle on the radio?

BBC 5Live and BBC 5Live Sports Extra are the only national broadcasters of live Championship matches, and they will commentate on an unspecified number of matches.

However, BBC Newcastle are expected to continue to cover every United match live.

I don’t live in Britain - is there any way I can watch Championship football?

Don’t worry - Football League matches are shown just about all across the world on a variety of channels.

Whether you live in the Balkans or Botswana, you should be able to watch at least some Newcastle games live in the Championship.

The Football League are currently in the process of updating the specific details for which broadcasters provide coverage in which country or continent.

Details for the 2015-16 campaign are available on the Football League’s website - www.football-league.co.uk/global/overseas.aspx - and will be updated for the 2016-17 season over the course of the summer.

How many times were Boro live on TV last season? Seemed loads, esp that Friday night slot.

Theres still plenty of foreign channels show championship games too.

That Friday slot will be shared with the PL now under the new TV deal.

Just for the Mitro debate again. Abel Hernandez, 4 in 28 in the Premier League, 20 in 38 in The Championship. Interesting to see if they'd have been promoted if they'd scrapped him for a 'proven Championship striker'.

Completely forgot that highlights will be shown on that f***ing godawful channel 5 highlights show.

Bollocks.

Sky do a highlights package of every Football League game on their website,  only an hour or so after the conclusion of the game.

Doesn't have any commentary on either,  just crowd noise,  it's really good

Mitrovic didn't do that bad to be fair he must of been close to double figures in his first season in a struggling team. Just needs a quick goalscorer alongside him.

Don't think that's necessarily true. He could work for himself up top if we actually controll possession. He's a big player who is already very good in the link up play. He'll get plenty of goals for us in this league if we controll possesion and don't just aim the ball up top and hope he wins a header.

Anita Lascelles Mbemba Dummett

Townsend Shelvey Colback Aarons

              Mitro  *goalscorer*

If we started with that, I'd be happy.
