Basically only means that a club can't come in and start negotiating with Chelsea and the first we hear about it is well into discussions.  They have to give us the chance right from the start to give them a offer they can accept before any other club gets involved in discussions.  For a normal club that actually competes its useful as you can't get blind sighted and get in late when the player might have already decided to go somewhere else.  But for us I really can't see how its even relevant, it would only work in situations where we can cast some sort of voodoo on the lad to make him only want to sign for us, otherwise we'll just get outbid anyway.

Why does that complicate anything? If they're willing to sell him now for £30m (inevitably paid over 5-6 years anyway) then what's the difference between that and us paying £5m loan fee now with option to buy at £25m at the end of the season?

Might be worth more than £30m at the end of the season

He will only have one year left on his contract so i don’t think so.

That's utter nonsense though. If he has another good season, there'll be zero commitment on their behalf to have any more than a passing 30 second 'this is the price, take it or leave it' chat. They will also be talking to other clubs in the background throughout the term of the loan.

Fucking cumbuckets.

They are not bothered about that as Rafa will be gone then, so we won't have to splash out (He won't be a Moyes type signing).

 That makes a depressing amount of sense.

Aye. Ashley needs to be careful. If he backs Rafa too much, he might be tempted to sign that contract.

Aye but they're perfectly happy to sell now for £30m apparently.  If they just weren't willing to sell now and only willing to loan in the hope of his price rising I could understand it, but not in this case.  Sounds more like we've just made no effort to get a future fee agreed.

If we have almost the same squad as we ended last season with then we're not in a bad place.

Kenedy and Dubravka sorted, Lascelles and Lejeune looking strong, Shelvey and Diame on top of their game and Ayoze fulfilling his obvious potential. We looked excellent at the end of the season and while nothings a given you know that Rafa wouldn't let their standards fall.

The loss of Merino while disappointing, after his early promise, isn't really going to impact as he hardly featured once we started improving.

The unity and desire the team showed was amazing and while Rafa will not want to risk upsetting that, two or three decent signings and replacements for those yet to leave will put us in pretty good shape for next season.

Plus profit, don’t forget the profit.

I’d like more natural creative flair in the centre, someone who can bring the ball forward and play it about a bit because Perez often has to drop too deep to try and do that and if we are playing one up front it leaves us isolated and makes us rely on the counter too much. Someone like Merino for example would be good...

We are desperate for a striker. So many points dropped last season through squandered chances (like spurs away). Bring in a finisher and i think we could be ok.
