Great deal for you Brummie. I've enjoyed watching Buendia gradually find his feet with yous, be interesting to see if Gerrard can get him and Coutinho in the same team

That is exactly the challenge.

How did the two floating number tens in behind Watkins go?

It wasn't really tried much.

I think this signing needs to be seen in the context of whatever else we do this summer, and where it leaves the squad, rathe than just the team.

Fair enough, you'd have thought with a big imposing DM behind them and wing backs offering width, it could work.

Still don't really 'get' Coutinho, like. He's OK  :dontknow:

If he has taken a massive cut and wants to play fair do's  but I get the James at Everton Comparison as well. Coutinho hasn't been that great to get me jealous.

Bruno has me wanting young, hungry on the rise players for us

^^^ Percy is considered the oracle with Villa fans, absolutely always correct.

Seems hungry to get back his best, he could have got more money elsewhere surely

I really dislike Aston Villa but I feel bad that our takeover has taken the shine off them slightly; they have really rich and ambitious owners who have been making impressive moves in the transfer market. They look like a team (hopefully like ourselves) that will at least try to challenge the ‘big 6’.

Impressive? Like who? For every Coutinho or Buendia, they have signed a Leon Bailey. Even Watkins hasn’t been great and was vastly overpriced.

To be fair the ambition is clearly there, obviously not every signing will be a hit but they have done some shrewd business over the last couple of years as well as dishing out some big fees.

Can see the point, but just don’t personally equate their transfer business with impressive- I wouldn’t take any of them for us other than Buendia and Coutinho (unless I’m missing someone). All about opinions though, I guess.

No I’d agree, impressive isn’t the word I’d use either really but I think they have done decently with the money they’ve spent overall. They signed Cash, Targett and Martinez for under £15m each over the last couple of seasons, might be a couple more but off the top of my head those stand out.

Strange world we live in now that Coutinho for £17m isn't seen as good business by some. It's an incredible signing.

I mean he hasn't performed very well at all for Villa so far (bar a couple of games against lower table teams). As someone mentioned above it feels like a very James Rodriguez esque signing. Similar in that they are both clearly world class talents but both aging and question marks over their hunger and desire.

Barcelona will be snapping Villas hands off for £17m and getting 400k(iirc) off their wage bill. Not strange at all to not view this as an incredible signing.

Once he gets a good pre-season with Villa I'd say he'll be dynamite next season.

He's 29 so hardly old, and I think him taking a 70% pay cut says everything about his hunger and desire.

Coutinho hasn’t played consistently well for years now.  He hasn’t pulled up any trees at Villa either.  All credit to the bloke for wanting to play rather than just coining it for Barca B - but I’m not convinced it’s the coup that some want it to be.  If the lad was even close to where he was, he’s not having to take 70% paycuts to join mid table sides.

Good point on the pay cut. I can't deny that if we were signing Coutinho I would be excited about it. But I feel like the signing has more of a chance to go sideways than Villa getting the Coutinho of pre-Barca.

It all depends on their other signings this summer. He's already shown he alone cannot take Villa up the table but they will struggle to find anyone better at that price so makes sense even if it's just to move sideways.

It’s all relative though. On the one hand, Brummie is telling us he’s clearly a class above everyone they have. On the other hand, who are the other players that have been moving for a comparable fee?

By either metric it’s a bargain.

Just because he's a class above everyone else in Villa's squad doesn't make him a bargain. James Rodriguez was clearly a class above everyone in Everton's squad last year, was he a bargain?

He's only a bargain if he performs well, adds to Villa's squad and helps them progress, not just because he's a big name player going for a low transfer fee.

I'm not saying this signing is guaranteed to fail, it just feels like the more likely outcome, in which case Villa have Coutinho's 70% less than 400k on their books for 4 years. It just feels like a James to Everton, Bale on loan to to Tottenham. Even Ronaldo to Manu this year, he's performed well but did he help manu progress?

I mean yeah, he’s only a bargain if he does well and he’s not if he doesn’t. That’s not the scintillating analysis we’re looking for though. Right now it seems like a bargain. Fair enough if you think it’s not going to work out.

Decent calculated risk that.

Wouldnt call it a bargain.  They are unlikely to get their money back. Less risk than James because he knows the PL and the pace of it and is used to English weather and to that profile of City.  As far as I know his injury record is better too.

I loved James as a player but he’s spent his whole career as a real luxury player and treated as a superstar elect.

Glad we’ve not got him.

I don’t want Dybala either on a perm deal.
