He has looked awful for ages now and it’s not even a position they really needed. He’s a world class center mid, incredibly durable, one of the best ball winners, readers of the game, great passer and dribbler and who will probably transform that arsenal midfield this season. He we also part of a midfield that lost 1-5 to us like, but I take your points on board. Maybe I’ve watched too much of him for England under Southgate tbh and judged him on that, where he’s looked nothing special at all, while we’ve been passed off the park by better technical players when we’ve met better sides. With West Ham, I would imagine he’s having to do a lot of work intercepting and carrying because of the way they’ve played and generally allowed teams to come onto them, and with also little in the way of effective attacking systems. He’s looked pretty Roy of the Rovers because that’s what he’s been basically tasked with - carrying a team on his back. Now of course you can take that and say, well if he does that at West Ham, he will be world class at Arsenal, because that’ll be him doing that in a better side. Fine, yep, I take that logic. I also don’t think I know more than Pep or Arteta. I’m just intrigued to see whether Rice will be brilliant in a side where there is less demand on the things we all know he is good at, and instead asked to be a world class deep playmaker in a team that dominates possession. Obviously we will find out soon. To be clear, I’m not calling him as shite, he’s very good at what he does, I just don’t know whether I see a £105 mill / world class midfielder. And although he's a good passer across the pitch, he's not very creative from deep either. He's a Kante type midfielder really, exceptional at winning possession and driving up the pitch, or knocking it someone in a better position. The reason Tonali excites me (and I would never dream of saying he's better than Rice at this stage ) is that to go along with all of that, he looks to be able to ping the ball over the top well from deep as well as cause damage around the box.
