I had a browse of some of the Everton message boards and they were all of the opinion Lampard had made a positive difference to the team and the main issue is lack of personnel. Gerrard on the other hand seems to been seen as Bruce Redux, hard to find a single positive opinion on him on Villa Talk.

This article is fucking HILARIOUS in retrospect https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-10192591/Steven-Gerrard-Aston-Villa-perfect-fit-Newcastle-blew-chance-appointing-him.html Quote Villa got Gerrard because they made him their No 1 choice. Had Newcastle done the same it is likely he would be their manager. Instead, while Gerrard was made aware of interest on Tyneside, it was as part of an interview process. He would be considered, that's all. It is not what any candidate wants to hear - and certainly not the manager of Rangers. Guest HTT II
Loads of my family support Villa and they regard Gerrard as their Bruce, they can’t stand him. He needs a quick upturn in results and performances to survive half the season never mind the full season.

kingxlnc
I see Gerrard more like a Souness rather than a Bruce. Top top quality midfielder of his time, ex Liverpool captain, won lots etc and got a good eye for a player. His name is attractive enough to get good players. Just got no idea how to manage. Souness actually built and managed some good teams in terms of quality of player, he was just useless and had one setting - angry. Gerrard seems the same. David Edgar
Quote Instead, there was Howe - an appointment that would have sent the fans giddy a year ago, but now feels undersold. This week's spin was about his brilliant interview, his impressive plans for the future, and how much it excited the decision-makers. shoddy Newcastle owners being diligent and appointing someone who had a clear vision for the club. Should've blindly appointed a PFM so his journalist mates could make up some bullshit.
David Edgar
Quote Be the first, be the Yaya Toure of this revolution, become a living legend on Tyneside. Yes, it's still a hard sell. But then add Gerrard. You want to be the best midfielder in Europe? Come and work with the coach who was. Play a system in which you can't have wingers because the full backs are already there, struggle to shoe-horn Bailey into that set up for exactly the same reason, blatantly need a central midfielder and a centre half, don't address those gaps but try to buy another winger? Guest HTT II
Emery was clearly first choice, I don’t know where Howe was on the list, but we clearly had a list and interviewed or wanted to interview everyone, so saying Howe was. 5th choice or 2nd or whatever would be misleading, none of them were our top choice other than Emery. I’m just so happy we got the RIGHT man!
