Miguel Almirón (now playing for Atlanta United)

Recommended Posts

My memory is shit these days but was there a brief period under Rafa when Miggy, Perez and Rondon were almost like a budget HBA, Cisse and Ba? One of the few times during the Ashley era we had a genuinely exciting attacking outlet.

It’s easy to forget he came in under Rafa and survived the hellscape of Bruce to then flourish under Howe. He’s one of the genuine old to new era connecting players and I think that alongside the PSG goal as well as the ‘purple patch’ that was key the winter before in getting us those wins that took us into Europe afford him cult status.

My own personal fave memory relating to Miggy was meeting a blind toon fan in the Fulham end next to the away section, the radios for the blind folk were not working for some reason, so he asked me to describe to him everything that was happening on the pitch, while all the Fulham fans around got gradually more irate. Eventually the bloke sat next to him and in front of me tells us he works in the Fulham ticket office and he’ll get us seats in the away end if we agree to fuck off and leave them all alone. Excitedly agree, walking underneath the stand to the disabled gantry by the away fans (not quite the away end seats I expected), we hear the crowd erupt above us. Miggy had just scored his side foot vollied masterpiece and I was arm in arm with a blind dude I had never met underneath the stand. What a day.

I'll always love Miggy, that patch where he was banging them in was great fun and he always plays with a smile. Great lad.

Delighted we're actually selling someone for money though, for far too long have we just let people drift away on frees. Need to be more proactive like this.

We looked good in Rafa's last half season here. European places good.

If ever Ashley had any intentions of backing Rafa and the club then that was the time but of course we all know how that turned out.

Yeah he really gave the team a shot in the arm when he arrived for the second half of Rafa's final season. Just the fact that he was prepared to run at players was such a novelty and even though he didn't notch goals or assists then either, you could see the work he was doing that led to others getting the glory. Plus I seem to recall him being a whisker away from getting that glory himself enough times that it was becoming a bit of a meme.

I wonder if more time with Rafa would've unlocked more in him longer term. But we all know what happened next.

Adore the little fucker and personally feel he's been so much more than just that purple patch. He's provided some amazing moments across his time here and otherwise made huge contributions to some good, bad and great teams. If he's going back to Atlanta I hope that works well for him and he leaves as a cult hero as far as I'm concerned.

You nailed it.

Miggy out, money used for DCL as backup to Isak. Good business.

Did you see his open goal misses for Everton last night ? he couldn't hit a barn door with another barn door

I'll always remember his performance against the Makems, when he saw how far they were pushing up against him I sure he just started with that lovely smile.

Played well for us in the periods where he was not serving a clown-car manager, so thank you and good luck to him. Probably the best pressing forward we've had, which would still matter a lot more if the team as a whole had not leveled up to the extent that it has. Never stopped running. Great smile and an almost hilarious lack of English. I wonder if he speaks any Geordie.

As a word of right wing caution, Mbeumo is currently on what looks like a hotter goal streak (yes, goals scored exceeding expected goals) than Miggy was in 22-23 or on-loan Willock in 20-21. Another player banging in way beyond xG this season is yes, good ol' Chris Wood. Be careful what you wish for.

The CL clinching patch of bangers + PSG (h) banger. Always smiling, even when he was sold a dream under Rafa and had to deal with Bruce. 100% committed, ran his bollocks off, lovely man on and off the pitch. Miggy it's been a pleasure. Hope you smash it in MLS again.

Take your point, but tbf Mbeumo passes the eye test as well.

You just have to watch a Brentford game to see he’s generally one of the most threatening players on show. That much was evident at the end of the cup game at our place, where they went from looking virtually toothless, to quite dangerous as soon as he came on.

You watch a Forest game, and whilst you might appreciate the work Wood puts in for team, you don’t really think he looks that much of a threat until he scores.

Atlanta able to spend more money this January than we have in 18 months

No real PSR over there.

They have spending caps, but have allowances for designated players.

On top of that, the newest MLS paid a £500m franchise fee, £150m more than what PIF bought us for.

Dunno if serious, but DCL has similar numbers to Bournemouth era Callum Wilson, who actually played in a higher scoring team. If Eddie could get NUFC era Wilson out of him, he'd be useful.

Out of contract in the summer, so last chance for Everton to get anything for him. Its not as if Everton have much PSR headroom to say no even if lowballed. Since weird swapsies are all the PSR rage, one option would be to loan them Wilson himself because he is "back in February" (!!)

Does "goals scored exceeding expected goals" not generally just translate to "is a better than average finisher"? Obviously some players will go through purple patches but I feel like this kind of stat can be interpreted multiple ways.
