ASM him and someone like Fraser breaking with pace from deep would cause problems for alot of sides.

ASM, him and Fraser trying to play a pass and move possession based game would not.

Yup. Still think Howe is trying to put square pegs in round holes with his tactics.

We either need to sign 6-7 players to fit Howe’s style or he needs to reconsider how the team are set up.

This will never work, imo. Players like Dubravka, Lascelles and Clark are never going to be good or confident on the ball, no matter how much coaching you put in.

Even Shelvey is pretty crap on the ball. He can pick a pass but doesn’t know what to do with it if he needs to hold onto it and wait for a pass to become available.

We need to be countering teams with the players you have mentioned above.

I think it’s a bit much to say Howe is trying to turn us into a possession team right now.

Yeah, we are looking to move into space better and receive the ball, but that’s just better football. Getting the keeper to hoof the ball away is just not viable, whatever your overall game plan is.

Of course we can’t dominate good teams with the players we have, but they must be capable of one or two passes more than they’ve shown.

Countering happens in transition when you win the ball back, there will still be times when you’re starting from the back or a static position, and you can’t just lose the ball every time.

Over the last couple of years, our attacking numbers have been considerably better when he has played through the middle. It's most likely because his direct running commits defenders and creates space for others.

He does have a midtable ceiling though, his decision making and passing range leave a lot to be desired. If and when we get to the level, we'll need an upgrade, but at this moment time he's the least of our problems.

Well said. It's not like we're pouring forward in suicidal numbers, we just don't seem to have players who can keep possession very well. It's quite telling that we put Joelinton in the middle and it seems he is able to do it better than the actual midfielders.

That would mean playing 3 CB's and we don't even have 3 fit ones never mind that they are all shit. Almiron is a shit none creating none scoring player like Joe, playing them in completely different positions because they are so shit in the actual ones they should be played in is not going to help.

I understand your views regarding Almiron, but using Joelinton as an example isn't the best idea, he's actually looked quite a lot better than the actual midfielders.

It's a pretty low bar to say that Joe is our best midfielder, maybe he is, but the standard is so low it doesn't mean anything. Our current defense and midfield would have us in the shit in the Championship. Joe was bought for a lot of money as a striker or an auxiliary striker, his record is terrible. He's the worst value for money signing we have probably ever made with Almiron probably second.

Yes it is a pretty low bar, that's because we have been run by Mike Ashley for 14 years where setting the bar low was company policy. Probably also a good reason why Joelinton, supposedly an auxiliary striker has actually turned out to be better in midfield than all of our midfielders. Obviously we set quite a low bar for recruiting midfielders as well. It's not hard to work out how and why we got to such a situation if you need it documented, but I'm sure it's been explained plenty on here already in various threads.

  • 3 weeks later...

Was fine playing in a system. The system we have now? I don't know how we are actually supposed to shape up.

You have two wide players Fraser and Asm who play high up the pitch and pretty direct. If they beat their man there's often no one in the middle.

Because Shelvey likes to spray a ball early from deep are midfield are nowhere near the front three nor is anyone else. We have 0 presence in midfield if Joelinton isn't playing beast mode. There is no protection for the defence and our full backs often overlap but are seldom played in behind and even if they were there's nothing to aim at.

Almiron doesn't fit into the way we are currently playing but I am not sure results would be any worse if he was an ever present.
