I know Howe has made noises about Shelvey in public, but I dont feel like it's out of any real rating of his abilities, more that he's the midfielder he's going to have to play that can potentially be effective. You're not going to talk him down in public when you (unfortunately) need him. I hope thats true anyway. Im sure an experienced manager is going to be as aware as we are how deficient he actually is. We absolutely need to replace him now, though. He's killing us.
Stottie
Another great contribution. He cannot finish though, can he? I think he should be relisted as a midfielder to jack up the pressure to get another striker in.
DJ_NUFC
Love him to bits, but we need someone to physically hold him back from approaching the 6 yard box, because even the wife today was like, “I could’ve finished that.”

Shelvey should be embarrassed strolling about for 90 mins That was some of the best midfield play I’ve seen from a NUFC shirt for a long time. some fucking engine, strength and passing ability. I like how he’s happy to get on the ball and can keep it then move again.
Karjala
If Joe had put in half of his chances this season, we'd be above Everton.
Thumbheed
Sick to fucking death of listening to commentators refer to his goal scoring record every single game. Would like to see him in the role Shelvey plays if we're not getting a specialised DM anytime soon.

r0cafella
Disagree, if we are playing as DM we need him to be positionally disciplined and understand the actual role. It’s one of the reasons why Shelvey is so poorly suited to it.
Consortium of one
In a squad that needs to be cleared of most of its players, Big Joe is one to keep.

His reading of the game is absolutely spot on, possibly to the detriment of his instinct. Something else I've been impressed with is the way he shapes his body, he seems to hover, leaving him free to go in whichever direction he needs. TRon
Thought he was a bit unlucky with that volley which hit the post. Heard a few people complaining that he missed it, but it would have been a fantastic strike.

Guest
Wonder if his form will in a weird way actually hinder us. He’s been great but by playing him in midfield you can’t really player him in a two so playing a number 10 becomes harder. He’s pretty much undroppable and probably rightly so but wonder if it’s going to hurt us long term. Was thinking how we could maybe get some goals out of Willock and using him further up the pitch off a striker you could do that. Same would apply if we got someone Alli or anyone of that type really. Edited January 22, 2022 by Optimistic Nut
Hanshithispantz
Why can you not play him in a 2?
Guest
I think you need someone create in there and if you’re playing a back 4, someone who can protect the defence. Midfield three is perfect for his own individual game currently, but not having a goalscoring option from behind the striker is hurting us. Hanshithispantz
If you're wanting to play a number 10 though then you have someone creative ahead of them. It's never really 2 in the middle anyway unless you're playing 2 out and out forwards, but that's been largely phased out. You would basically have Joelinton playing the box to box role, with his defensive duties dictated by whoever was alongside him, with a CAM/CF ahead of them. Hanshithispantz
I think people are underestimating just how good Joelinton has looked like. Up until the final 3rd he's visibly been the most consistently dominant midfielder I've seen us have since like early Tiote.

gbandit
He’s an absolute enforcer and it’s only really him and Trippier that give me any hope when I see the team sheet. Wood needs to put in a performance today and if so, he can separate himself from some of the dross as well

Yorkie
Infuriating how we can't get a good result without at least one of our best players getting crocked.
gbandit
The worst thing to come out of today was his injury, as well as our weaker players picking up knocks as well. Our squad is already lacking in quality without having to replace players. This lad was class and is such a calm presence everywhere apart from in front of goal
