In memoriam - Football Edition

Recommended Posts

If my dad was still here he'd no doubt re-recount the tales of Wyn the leap that I was brought up on, in particular Inter Milan.

My own memory is of the day we beat Bolton 4-0 at their place (Jaaskeleinen sent off) when Wyn was their half time hero. He came on and strode straight up to our end and spent his entire time on the pitch laughing, smiling, clapping, thumbs upping our end then a quick cursory wave to their end before disappearing back down the tunnel.

First time I remember see Wyn play was for Bolton at St James, Ollie Burton kicked him up a height, Wyn,  King Of The Leazes,  So many songs and chants. RIP

I remember that April/May 1965….Newcastle and Bolton both pushing for promotion….We won 2-0 and went on to win the League.

There's a nice piece about him in Johnn Gibsons "Newcastle United fc Story" which is really a recount8ng of the Fairs Cup run but the bit about Wyn was quiet, unassuming, very friendly and barely spoke English when he arrived. Quintessential gentle giant.

Madras, I have the same book, but mine is autographed by the Fairs Cup winning team. It's a terrific book and I've always respected John Gibson as a football journalist.

Those of our age group will have strood, like me, in the Leazes end and watch Wyn terrify those European sides during our cup run. It was a sight I will never forget.

Wyn never scored as many goals as I thought he should have, although he was a brilliant foil for Pop Robson. He was better on the ground than he was given credit for. As was Andy Carroll with whom there are similarities. Wyn stood at 6'1" so was hardly a giant in comparison.

It's a sad day knowing that he won't be around us any more but I, like many of our generation, will never forget this gentle giant of a man.

Thanks for the memories Wyn, and my respect to your family and friends.

Ah man 😔

Wyn was in his last season with us when my Dad started taking me in the Leazes. He seemed like a giant of a man then, that pic was what he was all about.

RIP
