Liverpool fans aren’t too happy they’d convinced themselves they were getting Isak.

All giving it we took your first choice target. Well, we kept yours

Probably end up here next year in some sort of Isak swap.

£40m according to reports. I think thats decent value tbf. Not all our signings are made with resale in mind

Also reports of them wanting £50m. Even at £40m, for a soon to be 29 year old with one year left on his contract? Good player but I can't see it, I think our name is probably just being used to motivate Spurs.

An interesting way of framing it...

The mental gymnastics folks go through to support their own delusions is quite sad.

We just stink at getting deals done quickly and discreetly. Allowing one of the cartel clubs to swoop in and do whatever they like once we've laid the groundwork.

Tbf, so are Liverpool. The transfer market is utterly bizarre.

It's difficult, because I'd rather we were challenging for these sorts of top players than breezing to sign inferior players that nobody else is bothered about signing. But, it feels like as soon as our interest is made public some other fucking club piles in and suddenly we were never even a realistic prospect for the player.

You can't blame our negotiators when agents and selling clubs are leaking info

So if that was the word, why wasn't he saying it given others were saying otherwise?

I hate to stick up for journos, but at a time when everyone else was reporting we were advancing for Ekitike, Hope was saying our confidence was fading

I'd say it probably falls within the two extremes.

We're trying to shop from the top shelf. It's super competitive and there's buyers with more clout and far deeper pockets. I don't mind us trying, as long as we get the required quality and numbers at the end of the day.

At the same time, while I don't think we're master tacticians the Ekitike bid has certainly served a purpose. Liverpool have missed out on their top target here too.

That's not true, this was post the stories around Liverpool going after Isak and threatening to hijack the Ekitike deal. I think most fans were starting to doubt at this stage.

One of the many things that sucks about the transfer window is that when the Twitter journos get revved up and start posting hot and heavy, it feels like it’s in real time, when there’s really a lag of probably at least 12 to 48 hours (totally made up numbers, but you get the drift).
