I genuinely cannot believe how bad this guy's general play is man. My goodness.

Perhaps from a pressing and defensive point of view he is more adept than Gayle, but anything to do with actually going forward he is miles off. He's really shocking.

Not even mad at the guy because it's not his fault he was brought here, but my word is he poor.

Some brilliant revisionism of Dwight Gayle in here like.

Gayle lost a big chunk of his pace after his muscle injuries in early 2017. He's now 5 years older and has proven throughout his career he's not a PL level goalscorer.

Wood is incredibly poor and if he's near any PL matchday squads next season then something will have gone very wrong in the summer. Stay up, sell him. And sell Gayle too.

we put some great crosses in today from corners. He is just shit, stop making excuses.

Basically said as much in my post like. Wilson's not scoring many from these great crosses either imho

I can understand the argument that he's good at holding the play so others can join in but he's not a finisher and he massively lacks the ability to put the ball either side of the keeper with power or precision, I would potentially try Willock up front against Spurs

My expectations of him weren't particularly high when we signed him but my god he's came nowhere even close to them! I honestly don't know what he brings to the party. He's slow, his finiahing is poor and for all people go on about his hold up play all I see is the ball bouncing off his straight back to the opposition. Yes he wins headers, you'd expect him to at 6'3" but there's more than that to Premier League football these days. Basically a poor mans Billy Whitehurst and in hindsight we'd have been better off keeping that £25m towards the summer budget and just playing Gayle.

Still, we signed 5 players in January and he's been the only disappointment so that's a good strike rate from Howe.

No we wouldn't have been better off just playing Gayle at all complete nonsense we wouldn't have got the wins we have with Gayle in there over Wood.

I thought his positioning was quite poor last night and he definitely lost as much as he won in the air. That said, the service to him was pretty poor.

It’s because his movement is shocking. He won’t get good service until he works out how to move.

It's not just his positioning (poor) and movement (glacial) which are the issue, but - Southampton aside - he seems to lack any confidence when presented with a headed chance. He has absolutely no conviction in his headers, which always seemed to be a strength in the past. He saps all momentum out of any cross and just floats the ball gently into the keeper's hands. Put your neck into it ffs.

If you played Gayle for 90 minutes for 16 consecutive games, he’d more than likely have achieved more than 1 goal and 0 assists like.

They’re both shite, but Wood is diabolical.

Going to say that Gayle might struggle with 90 mins for 16 consecutive games, given he's only managed around 30 mins in the PL all season

The service he gets is non existent. Nothing comes from the right flank and that only leaves Fraser on the left. He showed what he can do with that great ball from Shelvey but I don't recall him receiving any other crosses of that quality

While he hasn't had great service, he's definitely not a player who can make something out of a cross in the way Andy Carroll used to. If the ball in has to be as good as that Shelvey cross every time I'm not sure he can really be classed as a proper aerial threat tbh.

This, but the lad looks so self conscious and bereft of confidence as well. I can't see any fight in his eyes, he just looks sad and unsure all the time.

I disagree. I think Wood has contributed very little to our victories. They've more been down to the resergence of Shelvey, Willock and Joelinton in midfield, the 2 new full backs (until Trippier got injured) and the pairing of Burn and Schar at CB than anything Wood has done.

Annoyingly I was flicking through Instagram stories this morning and caught Wilson's brilliantly dispatched header against Everton last season. It summed up the differences between the two tbh.

I haven't had strong opinions about Wood until last night. I think it's very daft saying we've been getting results in spite of him, and suggesting we'd have had the same results with Dwight Gayle in that position is particularly ott. Because for all Wood's ineffectiveness as a goalscoring entity, he's enabled us to get the ball into the opposition half a lot more than we would've done without a big CF to occupy defenders.

But he's definitely a bit shit.
