Frank Lampard's situation at Chelsea could "turn ugly" if they do not go on a winning run soon, says their former striker Chris Sutton.

The Blues would have gone top of the Premier League with a win at Everton on 12 December.

But Monday's 1-1 draw with Aston Villa means they have taken four points from five matches to slip to sixth.

"At the moment, they are a crisis club because they are underperforming," Sutton told BBC Radio 5 Live.

"They are flat and that's why Frank needs to get a few wins under his belt and extremely quickly because it can, as we know, turn ugly at Chelsea."

Sutton been on the sherry.

3 points off 2nd. What a crisis.

Get the feeling that given time Lampard and Chelsea will come good, not that being given time is an option these days.

Agree with this.

It's a consequence of having such an open league this year (i.e. fairly poor quality). 1 or 2 good results and you go up 7 or 8 positions, and likewise for losses which leads to sensationalist tripe like that from Sutton.

As for Lampard/Chelsea I think they have the potential to be really, really good. Most of that hinges on whether Havertz and Werner improve though. They've had their 3-4 month 'settling in' period, they need to start performing ASAP.

I certainly don't think Lampard is doing a terrible job by any means currently.

Isn't a large part of Werner playing poor due to Lampard shifting him out to the left though? He started pretty well when used as a striker IIRC. Don't see anything to suggest Lampard is a good manager personally

He can't really play as a sole striker, Germany tried that and they failed and so did his previous club and they had to always pair him up with someone, tbf both Giroud and Abraham are scoring in most games they start as well, the problem is even on the wing Werner gets great chances, he just seems to need 3-4 chances before scoring one.

Lampard  is really showing his inexperience, that Arsenal game was a total shit show and despite having world class players and decent back-ups in every position he just can't seem to make it work.

on the one hand sure but they did spend a load in the summer and don't seem to be getting a return on that investment

According to Whoscored he played up front against Southampton and got 2 goals and an assist, then played there against Man Utd in that 0-0 in the next game and has been on the left ever since

Strange

Not really.  He's been pretty awful in his second spell at them and he requested the termination.

Sam Allardyce: I'm 66 years old and the last thing I want to catch is Covid

then why did he a man very comfortably off decide to come out of retirement (?) to take the WBA job when he could have just waited out the pandemic and then get another job if he wanted to? Covid didn't just happen last week
