Given others round them Isak as a 10 could work. Just not sure we have the others to make it work right now.

Yeah, with our current squad it would be more for special occasions i.e. breaking down an ultra defensive team. Basically shaking up an opposition who thinks they've got a good plan.

I've been a bit surprised at how conservatively we've implemented playing them both from the start, though. Seems to negate the benefit of it on first sight.

Worth remembering during our form/selection headaches which line up put in one of our best performances of the season.

Edit: 3-3 vs City

Got to hbe honest it had crossed my mind over the last 24hrs whether Eddie might be tempted tonight.

Unless we did something more radical i.e. the 3-5-2 STM was talking about earlier, I think my bias would be towards reverting to one on the pitch (Isak tonight) and one on the bench (Wilson), mind.

An important tactical observation I'd like to make at this point. This was truly peak-era Aniston.

That era Aniston will never be repeated. Like, it was a perfect storm of unreal fit, no internet porn and guaranteed diamond cutters every Thursday night. Like six years of tuxedo wanks. What a time to be a degenerate.

People who just can't see us winning need to get to the bookies, we're clear favourites, evens at best, with the draw 3/1 and a Brighton win 11/4.

I agree that I wouldn't go as far as to say we're "clear favourites" from a non-betting point of view. Whether that's because I have been watching us more closely than Mr Paddy Power has, or if it's just the natural pessimism of being a Toon fan I dunno.  But I've never met a poor bookie.

Fav to beat Arsenal and look how that turned out.

Mind I wouldn’t be piling in at evens based only on what I saw of the 2 teams last time out .

I can see us coming out of the traps with intensity, but if we can't force an early goal we'll fall into more of a mid-block

This is the way. It would be a mistake IMO to try to start the game slowly given the crowd and how we've flown out of the gate in games like this one. If they are able to weather an early assault then settle in.

Sixsmith seems a canny bloke, but he's fucking nauseating at times. Far too overfamiliar.

This is how it starts, give it a year and we'll all be comfortable calling him a cunt

                          Pope

Trippier      Schar      Botman        Burn

      Anderson    Bruno     Willock

Almiron             Wilson           Joelinton

That's what I'd go with. Big shout putting Anderson in, I know, but I think we need to get the two Joes causing trouble on the left side tonight.

That therefore rules-out the Joe/Bruno double-pivot, and it rules out having both Joes in a typical middle three. It means someone's got to come in like-for-like for Longstaff, meaning Gordon or Anderson.

Would like to see the lad given another bash. He's getting there.

Isak and Maxi sat on the bench is a sexy as fuck option. Wils deserves the CF shirt.

I think this has to be a start either Isak OR Wilson scenario, not both. Bring in ASM or Gordon instead which will give us three in the middle, Joelinton, Bruno and Willock. Hopefully that would give us the bodies to compete in the middle in Longstaff's absence, especially considering how good Brighton are at playing through that area.

Yeah, this is sort of my thinking as well. Although it's not because I think Wilson deserves to start, but that he's better suited to the match.

If we could guarantee a Man City level performance from ASM, I'd put Joelinton back in midfield and move out Anderson.

I'm petrified, like.

Brighton aren't unbeatable, as we've seen, but I'm not sure tactically how we'd do it. Yet we have to.

This is me as well. I know we have many well meaning sorts telling us how we should be revelling in playing games like this, and I am, but I'm also dreading it as well. Feels worse than the League Cup final because I never really believed we were going to win that at the time as our form had dipped and we lost Pope just before the game. Today's match almost has too much riding on it for me to enjoy it beforehand, hopefully once it kicks off the adrenaline will take over.
