NUFC Transfer Rumours

Think Dan Burn's reputation suffers a lot from how much he faded at the back end of last season. He's clearly a very good player and played a big role in the first half of last year, where our defence was the best in the league.

Still think we need a new defender, CB or LB, preferably both but I'd also much rather we waited until the right player comes along that works with us for the right fee and reasons and rush into buying someone, just because we've 'only' bought two senior players.

The thing is, Dan Burn wasn’t even bad last season. [emoji38] Find the hate for him fucking loony [emoji38]

It's not hate at all. I rate him and i think he's a really good guy, but he's a CB filling in at LB. It's hardly lunacy to suggest I would prefer a  good specialist left back playing in that position is it?

Are there any other teams in the Premier League or Champions League that played almost the entire season with a centre back playing as a fullback? He will be targeted next season, you know he will. Add speed, mobility, crossing ability and attacking prowess on that left hand side and we look more balanced and more threathening.

Any suggestions as to who we could get?

A lot of it is because he looks awkward (stuff how it looks if it's effective imo) and because he's "seen" as a centre half though he played plenty at LB during his career

That's not my job, it's Dan Ashworth's.

I'm sure of the 120,000+ professional footballers in the world, there is one young enough, good enough and affordable enough within the boundaries of FFP, that would improve our first team. If not, i'm happy to stand corrected.

I just think the club aims to be at the top in 4-5 years time. This success game a bit too soon, and we will have a "disappointing" season. Most likely 6-8. We just cannot financially compete with the top 6 in a while.

People have to realize it takes time to build a strong squad and rebuild the whole club from the academy up.

Yup. There’s a lot of variance in one single season, so much depends on injuries to us and opponents and being on form for the right fixtures. We were really good last season but the squad is thin and not used to Europe. No one should be disappointed if we finish behind non-Europe Chelsea and/or Spurs and end up 6-7th without even mentioning Brighton and Villa.

I’m 100% certain our squad is stronger now than it was a year ago and will once again be stronger for 24-25 than it is now. We can’t forget that we gave a massive headstart to everyone due to Ashley but we are doing our best and in few years are hopefully challenging everyone in England and Europe. One season where potentially our league position goes backwards doesn’t change that.

Nathan Ake?

Add in Burn,s job wasn't to be a marauding modern full back anyway with the system we played

I think we'd struggle defensively we had 2 trippier style full backs

We see this argument a fair bit. Re. Our player roster isn't fit for a Champion's League run.

Absolutely fair. We've very little chance of progressing in the CL to the extent that more progressed clubs are. It'll take years until we can compete at that level. Nothing is going to change with that situation by signing a left back in this window. Hopefully we do but if anyone is harbouring ideas of true CL progress, I'd say that's unrealistic.

His lack of mobility kind of dictates the systems we can play though. What if we're getting stifled down the right and we need to open up the left hand side to give us a new line of attack?

We can't, because we have a CB playing LB. You can ask a full back to play a defensive role. You can't ask a 6'5 CB to get forward and trouble his opposing winger/full back if he doesn't have it in his locker because of his physical limitations. A mobile full back gives us options. Dan Burn, to an extent, robs us of those options.

And let me just reiterate, before people start crying, I like Dan Burn, I rate Dan Burn and i'm comfortable with him being backup CB (even first choice CB) and backup LB, but I would prefer a more modern, mobile first team left back and I'm disappointed that doesn't seem to be the club's priority

CL doesn’t have many teams that a team who finished 4th in the Premier League should be scared about. Yet according to some we absolutely can’t enter the competition playing some of the players that got us there.

Most definitely is, I mean that Antonee Robinson for example is probably a better/more natural full back, but probably not the answer long term either. You're not really looking at the big picture here.

Reading this page, poor Targett man. Seems to have been written off and all due to a bit bad timing with when he got his injury.

I think he was always intended to be a steady Eddie stepping stone type player tbh.

Everyone of those players at the back has made mistakes. Target has been away for a while, but in that last game there showed glimpses of what he was like when we brought him here. Like the rest of the squad, he’ll be that bit more sharper there now going into the two games over the weekend. Whether he starts games or is back-up to potentially a new left-back he’s certainly someone I wouldn’t target…..get it? Target! :bluestar:

I'd be more than happy with Targett as our left back. I thought he did great when he first came, but the reason I, and I guess most other people don't talk about him as our first choice LB is because Eddie doesn't seem to see him as that. Even last season when most people were calling for Dan Burn to be dropped and Targett to come in, Eddie stuck with Burn and Targett warmed the bench. If he's our first choice LB this season, great!

He was excellent for the most part, but also with obvious limitations particularly on moving the ball forward and attacking, do you not see left back as a key area to improve going into a champions league campaign?

I do agree on upgrades, and it will start to happen on players we like and are good. It’s more the way some people go on about Burn which I find annoying. All this “can’t believe we will be going into the season with Burn” is doing the bloke a huge discredit. He played a massive part in creating one of the meanest defences out there, and I think the disrespect he gets is baffling. I would look at left back to upgrade, but if it doesn’t come off, I won’t be throwing my arms in the air in disgust with Burn playing there, he’s shown he is perfectly capable.

Basically I think the Burn slating is lifting and uncalled for.

'Slating' is a bit strong. I haven't seen anyone on here saying he's shit. That would be slating!

Saying you would prefer to go into next season with a specialist mobile full back instead of Dan Burn playing there, isn't.
