Option to buy makes it a sensible move

He either proves to be a big upgrade and we keep him or he's useless and we can move on 12 months

But have you considered the possibility that he ends up being useless and we still keep him :pow:

The group therapy of this thread as we all gradually talk ourselves round is lovely.

Utterly confused as to what the pecking order for our goalkeepers will be now.

I assume (hope) it'll be:

1.  Pope

2. Ramsdale

3. Ruddy

4. Gillespie

and then Dubravka (sold) + Vlach (deadline day loan deal)

I still believe Pope is a far superior goalkeeper to Ramsdale. Complete faith in Eddie of course

Seems straight forward.

I guess Ramsdale is happy to be a number 2 these days

My guess is he competes. Knowing Howe as best I can know him from afar. Who knows what ultimately happens.

edit: To clarify I would guess Popey is #1. But as I say, see where the chips fall.

I'm anticipating Ramsdale will be given the chance to own the no.1 shirt

Don't quite understand why so many are down on his signing - he's a good GK, and his best years are still potentially ahead of him

I agree, he gets the opportunity. It's not a bad move even if he ends up number 2.

It really depends on what you think about his days at Arsenal.

I am very happy for a backup GK for 1 year at such a 4m cost. However if this is our long term answer than I would be disappointed.

Next season if happy keep Ramsdale, sell Popey and bring in a new target No1 when the keeper pool has more options in it.

So the question is, who's going to be no.1 at Burnley next season .. have they burned bridges with us or is all aok and we can ship them one of ours ?

They signed that German kid, dunno if he’s meant to start. They could do worse than ol’ Dubs for a season or two.

So disappointed in this deal. It won’t be a loan, we will make it a permanent buy because Pope will be off next summer.

Just average as average can be. Like a Matt Targett level of signing which I’d hope we moved on from.

If Pope is off and we make Ramsdale permanent, then we will buy another keeper next summer. This is decent deal: if he is good, we make him no 1. If he fails, we send him back, if he is ok, we make him a good no 2.

That’s what I think we’ll do. Win win.
