Pope is nowhere perfect but he's 10x the keeper this lad is. Can't believe folk thought he'd be an upgrade. Almost as if they've never seen him in nets before.

It’s nice to see what we might look like with a keeper that isn’t terrible on the ball. But it’s not like with the way we play it has added an extra dimension to our game. Not really all that helpful if he concedes at will, either.

I actually disagree.  We aren’t going to out football teams with more resources than us.  
 

We need a prime Pope level GK that make saves, catches crosses and sweeps. If he can play that’s a bonus but I want GK skills.  
 

We must resist the desire to become North East Spurs on a smaller budget.  Players that are technically better than the other 13 but lack character and basics. I don’t want Vicario.

Not convinced he should have saved that shot like.  I think only a really world class keeper spots how Dorgu is moving, through a crowd of players, and is decisive enough to move to a position where he can be confident of diving down into the far corner and keeping it out.

Think any keeper of Ramsdale's reputation is going to get questioned if they get their hand to a shot that still goes in.

Guess that's him done now, unless Pope picks up an injury. I'm hoping the fee wasn't mandatory, and its just £5m down the drain and not the full £25m. Think for that money we'd get a top class keeper from Europe.

It's not as easy as taking a keeper relegated twice in a row on loan, granted.

 

Benfica/Porto keepers should be looked at if Dortmund's is beyond us. We've spent £55m on a winger we didn't need, £40m on a player we already have. £25m would get a good keeper in Europe, £55m top end nails it. That's the point. Money went in the wrong places, again.

I agree we’ve spent poorly.  
 

It’s just not going to be easy replacing cornerstone players that have taken us this far.  No foreign league is as physical as the PL so whatever they do isn’t easily translated. Marmadashvelli hasn’t impressed in his few appearances and he was meant to be the dogs bollocks.  
 

We’re not replacing Martin Dubravka and Ciaran Clark anymore.

Agreed in general, but Keepers are different. Physicality shouldn't matter as much. Think mama hasn't shone because he's in the shadow of one of the world's best and the bar is high. If he was here we'd be having a very different season.

 

Ironic that I'm wanting a Dubravka vs Manure instant impact of a keeper, and he was a no one, on loan, and bought for less than the loan fee for Ramsdale.

Yep - that Vicario was getting loads of plaudits when he first joined. Put that ball on his head and he struggled majorly and everyone has clocked on.

Aye but its one of the easiest things to see with your eyes. You know a small keeper is going to struggle (extreme example - but physical players are represented in all leagues). You don't know how a keeper is going to handle the pace, pressure and quality of the league. Those are the unknowns I think you gamble on.

After the horrendous cock-ups against Arsenal and Marseille I was eager to see what Ramsdale could offer, but the height and stature of Pope - at the very least - makes him the better option. Ramsdale doesn't look like he can command the box at all.
