Baseless view but I don’t think Pope pulls off many of those saves given his recent form.

Agree.

Can see us going back to the negotiating table in the summer to try to get the purchase price down.

If we get him for c£15m I think you can’t really argue with that.

We’d still need a proper first choice though to replace Pope.

You think Ramsdale will be number one going into next season ?

Not necessarily. He'll get a an opportunity to stake his claim starting games the rest of the way now I imagine. However, I think they'll also sign another keeper good enough to challenge him once the summer window comes around.

Has to be said that Chronicle website is an absolute farce to modern internet

He had a good game judging by highlights - I still wouldn't sign him. Been subpar this season IMO.

Think the deal for him will get done along with another younger goalkeeper prospect to challenge him.

I think that would be a mistake. While I've mostly backed him from some of the more vitriolic criticism, he doesn't inspire confidence as a no 1 keeper, I don't think he commands his area well enough.

Yep on corners especially, he’s unfortunately not tall enough so it’s not going to get any better.

Pope has been crap for most of this season. But I see we’re now using the same hypothetical argument of ‘Pope would save that’ when Ramsdale was chucking them in earlier in the season.  But it’s now roles reversed

I think it is worth pointing out that he often looks full stretch when other keepers wouldn’t. Due to his size and also positioning at times. He seems to dive late a lot of the time. Which isn’t even a massive dig or anything. He is stopping the ball going in the net and the Zirkzee one was class.

I just find it odd that him playing well for a change suddenly means Pope wouldn’t have saved any of those shots last night

I still wouldn’t sign him. Not unless he fancies taking a pay cut and the £20m fee is cut in half. I don’t think he is our long term number one and it’s too expensive for a back up keeper.

I think he has a chance to fully stake his claim between now and the end of the season, though. Unless he totally falls of a cliff performance wise. He should play the next 4-5 games as a bare minimum. Cups and league. See if we can get some kind of consistency going.

On current form I don’t think Pope saves that Zirkzee shot, probably not the Yoro header either.

For balance I don’t think he would be working as hard to get out do the way of the Casemiro goal either mind as he’s more stationary compared to Ramsdale’s sort of Pickford style.

Both shite. I’m desperate for a new keeper.

I dunno. The Yoro one probably not. As he seems a cumbersome oaf these days in getting down.

With his big old wing span. I think he saves the Zirkzee one and it’s not so dramatic.

Almost one of Pope’s problems is that he makes really hard, what would be finger tip saves. Look quite easy because of his positioning and size. Then falls down with his brain farts and mad rushes of blood. A bit like Bramble’s mad moments. But from a keeper.

But it’s all hypothetical and seems a bit daft to analyse it in that way. Which is exactly what I’m doing

This is where I'm at with him. He made some saves last night look brilliant because he's short for a keeper so has to dive for everything. A big man just sticks his hand out.

Fair enough he's still saving those shots, but it's not those shots that are the problem. The problem is when anything goes in the corner, he's got fuck all chance of getting anywhere near it. That said he was great with the ball last night, something he's consistently good at. Playing with 10 isn't so bad when your keeper can just be the extra outfield player at times.

He played well last night, but overall I don't think he's the long-term solution as No 1. I don't care how good enough he is as a footballer, he's just not good enough as a goalkeeper. A few Hollywood saves of shots others could almost catch won't change my mind on that.

I hope our scouting team are working overtime because I think Pope seems on the wane or at least has trust issues with his body, and Ramsdale is not the solution either. We've just got to limp through to summer though.

Yeah, would need to play like that til the end of the season for me to consider it good value to sign him permanently. As Eddie said in his post match, he's had chances in the past and failed to claim the shirt. 1 game won't change things but if he can put a run of form together then maybe.

If not then we are better served putting that money towards a genuine number 1 goalkeeper and then just keeping Pope as number 2.

He's 6 foot 3.

He did well last night, deserves to keep the shirt for now. Don’t think we can say what saves Pope would/ wouldn’t have made. Can’t see how he could be blamed for their goal, it was poor defending in front of him.

He doesn’t look it to me. Is it @Rich on here that is adamant keepers lie about their height? Trafford for example

He certainly plays smaller than he is if he is 6ft 3”.

Yeah I didn't think he looked it but is 6ft 3, taller than likes of Pickford, Henderson, Raya and only just smaller than Lammens, Allyson by an inch. Think they just have more presence maybe

Except he wasn't chucking anything in.  He had some weak games but never made the huge mistakes Pope has made repeatedly.

I do think we should be looking for a top keeper though.  Despite the fact Ramsdale is better than Pope.  We should be looking for someone of a really high level.

Reporting for duty. 6’2” at most if you ask my very uneducated opinion.
