Lotus
Think Lukic was his man and he lost him for the goal. Lukic was nearly through a few minutes later and Ramsey lost him again. Other than that, enjoyed seeing him on the pitch. Edited December 18, 2025 by Lotus

They need control (offensively and defensively), ability to protect the defence and open teams up. I liked Ramsey's work off the ball especially in the first half. On the ball though - very little forward thrust. Doesn't break a line with ball carrying like a prime Joelinton or Willock, barely finds a forward pass all night. Maybe collect the ball nicely in a good position, turn, play it sideways rinse and repeat. We have to get the ball to Bruno, Miley, Thiaw or Schar for any ability to break a line with a pass or find someone in a dangerous position. 3 of them in defender roles. That's not entirely Ramsey's fault. Howe has identified this weird squad profile of a 3 man midfield usually, 3 that can pass, 3 that want to run with the ball. It's weird. I thought Ramsey would be a hybrid but he doesn't seem to be. I'd rather 2 of those half CM's like Joelinton, Willock, Ramsey and 4 proper CMs like Bruno, Tonali & Miley. You need more midfielders that can pick a pass. We don't have passing ability from wide either. Doesn't he break the line by receiving the ball in those spaces between the midfield and defence though?

Exactly. Barely seen that at all in Howe's time here. Massively helped by having both Schar and Thiaw together. But it seemed like they were finding him with ease last night. He was often open and demanding for it, if not. For various reasons. You don't see any other of our midfielders doing that, TBH. So he is unique for us in that sense. Not when the next move is square or backwardsand allows the opposition to get back into position. The attacks don't build, they stall. And the positions he gets the ball aren't super dangerous either just decent. He needs to attack the box. He'll get the ball in 14 or 18 and not do any useful or progressive with it. Consitently. AyeDubbleYoo
Sure he can do more, but the point was about breaking the line, which he did with movement and receiving the ball in good positions.

Just need him to stay fit and get a run going. Thought he gave the ball away a couple of times so the jury is still out for me. I do like that he was trying to hold the ball when he was dispossessed though, that means he does think he's capable. Maybe just needs to get up to speed yet. Scoot
Just watched the highlights on YouTube and he's actually involved in most of our attacking play last night in 1 way or another which I never realised as much last night. Probably his most effective game for us last night and definitely a step in the right direction for him. Needs to play again on Saturday and get a run in the team which should help him further. Gallowgate Toon
His ball carrying will come - he had good numbers on this front a couple of years ago when he was playing more CM/AM. We saw a snippet of it against Leeds.

Andy
I don't agree that he's been lumped in with Elanga personally, in that case surely Wissa would be in the same boat too? I'd like to think most people are judging him on what he's done in his career as a whole, what we need in our midfield, and what he's done on the pitch for us in his 13 appearances so far. Last night was the first performance where he hasn't been largely anonymous. It was a foundation for him to build on, but personally I'd still need to see a lot more from him to convince me he isn't just neat and tidy and not much else, which is the impression I largely got from him at Villa. Yea, but when you don't have a 20 goals-a-season striker, you need to have many players to pop up with few goals. If you have 3 CMs who open up defence but no one supports the striker to offer threat, it's no use. Even Longstaff scored few. He is a strong runner with the ball but needs to be braver when against low block. Either try to beat your man or play combinations. Now it seems he plays the simple pass quite often. And he is quite one-footed. And yes. we need players who can pass better and receive the ball between the lines on the half turn. Bruno can, but he usually is the player playing the first pass and we need others. Woltemade can, but he is not learnt the tempo yet, takes too much time with the ball. He has attributes to be success here though.

Sibierski
Best I can say about Ramsey, he’s an OK player where if we rotate in games like last night we don’t drop off too much and it can rest legs. But do I see him good enough to be a starter, no, which means we need to sign a CM who can start in the summer, which is damning for Ramsey as we spent £40m on him. Both him and Elanga are similar in they’ll be squad players that have their uses, but for £100m, you can get multiple young players from abroad who can do that, and hope one strikes gold. My original point was that there has been cases of people framing their judgement of Ramsey through an 'Elanga and Ramsey, what a collective waste of money' lens when, really, only one of those two players (might be) deserving of the label. For the record I'd judge them all individually. Elanga has been very disappointing on the whole but Ramsey has shown promise. The jury is still out on both of them though, Wissa too (though I've always been convinced he'd be a good signing).
Loki679
He just seems like another nothing midfielder. Decent to good at most aspects but doesn't excel at anything at doesn't really have a specialised role. Willock mk.2 basically.
