I think we need to separate the tactics and style we were planning to go for this season from the one we ended up with. The season has really been more about crisis management than any kind of planned progress to the future.

I am not sure what the plan was from the beginning tbh, i don't think we have had one. We have pressed in select games, and not done much else in others.

that’s the part I totally don’t understand. Still remember the reports that we were after Ekitike and planned to play him as a 10 behind Isak? I thought we would really switch to 442 or 4231 this season, or at least mix them up occasionally.

I really don’t understand it. In the universe where we got Ekitike and able to keep Isak - what’s the formation Eddie going to play?

Evidently Howe just wanted to rotate strikers

Looking back I think the plan was to actually not weaken our hand in selling Isak. I think the plan was actually ekitike to replace Isak.

Maybe. When he's had 2 first team strikers on big fees and wages.... he's just rotated them.

Well we can never be sure, and obviously we didn't get many of the players we ideally wanted. I just don't think we can use just the last few months as evidence of what things will always be like. There have been so many things which have impacted us and (I believe) caused Eddie to revert to doing whatever he thinks will grind us a few results. I don't think we've really had the luxury of focusing on philosophy too much.

He's another who was bought with little thought to our current style imo. Him, Elanga, Wolte....like what was the plan?

That being said, I'd like to see more of him next season with a tactical shift, he's definitely got something about him.

Wolt was a clear panic buy, I’m assuming we thought Elanga would fit our style of play without realising that he can’t even trap a ball and I’m guessing Ramsey was to rotate with Bruno to manage gametime.

Just to rotate him in midfield.

Spent 45m to replace Longstaff. Great stuff.

Obviously hope he goes on to be more impactful.

Think Howe wants a substitute bench of Harvey Barnes's. We don't have the FFP wriggle room for that. 1 or 2 is fine but we can't have a full bench of them. We need younger, cheaper, high ceiling possible high sell-on value players in the squad.

Harvey Barnes himself is a bit of a PSR nightmare. Unlikely to generate masses of FFP/PSR headroom but a valued squad member and not easily replaced and that's best case scenario for Ramsey. We get 3-4 good years out of him, get our money back and get like £20-30m additional headroom - AT BEST.

Said it even when he was getting stick earlier in the season  he’s one of the few players we have who can receive it under pressure, turn, and make a forward pass.

Looks a different player when the game is spread out and we aren't just getting involved in scraps all over the pitch.
