[CLPO, 1st leg] Qarabağ vs. Newcastle United: 18/2/26 @ 17:45 (TNT Sport)

All said, they’re probably at a similar level to USG. So if we don’t play well, we’ll come unstuck tonight. Play well and it should be relatively comfortable.

Did I read right that it's an artificial pitch? Hate having to play on those.

A draw with no injuries wouldn't be the worst result.

I know this won't be the same (I don't think), but aye, memories of Luton Town and QPR in the 80's where we never won 'on plastic'.

Saying a draw would be decent is a bit Iraqi Minister of Information for me, like. We’ll be going to win and we most likely will do, and comfortably.

Finally some sense and a bit of optimism. Respectfully, we're playing the team in 2nd from the Azerbaijan league (equivalent to champo strength maybe?) over two legs.

Not in love with all the doubt expressed so far like, this isn't Man City away. [emoji38]

I'd draw a distinction between "decent" and "fine" though. Wouldn't exactly be ecstatic with it, but it also wouldn't be a disaster.

It's more the away game and potential banana skin element, given some of their other results, that has me not wanting to be overconfident for tonight.

If we can get it done tonight I'll be delighted, but all that matters to me is getting to the next round by the end of the home leg.

We’re reliably informed in another thread and by Edwards and Hope that wage bills are the most accurate predictor of team performance - so because Newcastle has the 8th highest wage bill in the PL (or had it in the last set of accounts - I suspect we’ve overtaken Villa) then we overachieve if we finish above that.  Which seems reasonable to me.

Qarabag’s entire wage bill is the same as Kieran Trippier’s base salary.  I fully expect any XI we put out to be able to beat these comfortably over two legs.

That's an incredibly bad faith argument like. They're correlated to league position, not an accurate predictor of team performance.

Anyway let's smash these.

No intent of bad faith - the reason there’s a correlation is because wages are linked to the players you can sign.  There’s not a single Qarabag player who a single person on here would be happy to see NUFC run off and buy tomorrow.  Being knocked out by these would not be a shoulder-shrug moment.

Over a single leg tie i would strongly disagree looking at our domestic cups where "weaker" opposition can get a result in a one off fixture.

However over two legs I am in total agreement they got results in the champions league but still had 6 put passed them by liverpool we shouldn't fear them over two legs.

Completely agree if we were to get knocked out over two legs, but I don't think we will.

Totally agree, if this was an FA Cup game there would always be the nervous thought at the back of the head - owt can happen.  Second bite of the cherry should mean going through - no excuses.

I don’t either 👍 I’m going for a 3-1 win here.  Eddie’s mags to maintain their impeccable away record*

I worry more of the travel, the quick turn around to the next fuxture, the quality of pitch and potential knocks and injuries than I do the opposition.

Hope that doesn't come across as arrogance or complacency.

This is a great chance to progress and we need a professional performance which I am sure Eddie and the lads will know already.

Seems a real mixed bag in here with some folk suggesting this will be a walk in the park. I'd also take a draw.

Granted, we should win of course, but football isn't played on paper and the travel time, pitch and minimal time between fixtures will all be a factor.

These lot have qualified for the play-offs after 8 matches in the Champions League. I don't think we can take them as lightly as writing them off as 'League One standard'.
