Barcelona 7-2 Newcastle United (8-3 agg.) (18/03/26) | post-match from pg. 75

A memorable and fun champions league campaign, something unthinkable not too long ago.

I’d be lying though if I’m not quite worried about that performance second half. Yes you’re against one of the best teams in the world but the manner of the collapse was horrific.

At any level, the lack of leadership and overall mentality to steady ourselves would be alarming. We didn’t do the basics - keep our shape, defending crosses, slack passing etc.

Thought the disappointing thing about was how our heads dropped. Showed a lack of character I thought, and it's maybe a reason why we give up goals so easily.

Ah well. In some ways, we did better than I expected. But some of that defending is just so bad. We just seem to switch off in big moments or at the start or end of halves.

Hard to be too harsh on the group, mind. Barca are unplayable going forward at times. Just a shame the score got a bit embarrassing and we gifted them goals.

Barca will get dicked off someone like Arsenal. They are woeful at the back and we just couldn’t hang around for long enough to test them some more. That penalty totally knocked the stuffing out of us and changed their gameplan for the second half.

Very disappointed but won't lose any sleep. Gave it a really good go but came up short against a superior side. Think the myth that PL is the best in the world has pretty much been exposed in a single round of CL football.

I hope this doesn't prove to knock the lads' confidence too much and there is some perspective put into place amongst the squad and staff given that Barca are an elite team amongst world football.

We cannot go in to Sunday feeling sorry for ourselves or licking our wounds. As bad as a result tonight was in the end, we need to park on it, reflect on the positives and now firmly get our sights on Sunday. Sunday is huge.

Played some brilliant stuff for 3/4 of the tie and then capitulated massively. Nothing to get particularly worked up by and plenty of positives there, but also how are some people not pissed off at how we lost?

We didn’t just lose to a much better team, we shipped some terrible goals. Yes it’s Barca away and they’re bloody brilliant, but they hardly score 7 every home match against the strong La Liga teams. We aren’t a bunch of amateurs here. We’re a team competing for the CL quarters against a team that also didn’t qualify automatically for the second round.

Not the end of the world though… if we act like it, that’s just how people react watching sport! We’ll get over it, especially when we thrash the Mackems.

May be a simplistic take on a complex issue, but think the penalty just before half time killed us. Get in at half-time level, having come back twice, and they would have come out right in the zone again and ready to run through walls.

Partly this and partly needing to outscore them in the second half. Once they scored first in the second half we need to score 3 to win.

There's definitely a mentality/concentration issue. It's hard to put your finger on it but it's no coincidence that we constantly concede late goals and daft goals, and goals only minutes after we've scored ourselves.

Could just put it down to fatigue but it's been happening since the start of the season.

We gave it a good go for 3/4 of the tie, but realistically we’re a midtable side this season and there’s a big difference in quality between us and Barca. I don’t really have any complaints.

A good run. It's all about progress and the last 16 is exactly that. We're not there yet, but we could be, and that's what is so damn exciting. After seeing other results in the Champions league this week, and the clear officiating bias, we can hold our heads high, regardless of the scoreline here. Hopefully it makes the players hungry for more.

Oh also, add Barca to the list.

I can't stress then enough, I really really hope this doesn't happen. Arsenal winning something like the Champions League with their anti-football, will make other people look at it and try and emulate. It's bad enough in the Premier League already, hopefully how shit the English teams have done in the Champions League this past week makes some revaluate the low block, set piece driven dross we've seen this year.

If we somehow manage to recover in the league and make Europa League, I'll still be pretty happy with this season. We're basically in the CL to just try and make some money.

We’ve made a fuck ton, can’t complain on that front but we’re miles away from being a knockout team in the champions league.

Thought Ramsdale was terrible today mind

Yeah agreed, he dives off his left instead of his right leg and he saves the pen for starters

Combination of fatigue and a lack of composure and character concentration.

It’s very unfair to say this but it’s the Thiaw defence.  can look good for large periods. But it goes.

I agree. I just think Barca’s defending is suicidal and a good side that can defend space better than we did, will beat them with a bit to spare

He was lucky with that yamal miss as it was an awful save by him just before.

I disagree. They showed resilience to dig in after going 1 down and 2-1 down.

I think there is a bit of tactical naivety to keep playing basketball with Barca when you're chasing the game and have gassed players. It's going to end messy.

Agree with this. Let Real win it like usual.
