Newcastle United 3-1 Brighton & Hove Albion - 02/05/26

Kudos to Brighton's young cool hipseter manager for resorting to "put a big centre half up front" tactic by bringing Dunk on at the end

I'd also like to add, I fucking love Howe, I still think he's a very good coach and I'm genuinly rooting for him to turn it around. It's just starting to feel like the beginning of the end, which is a bit gutting.

Very satisfying that Minteh had an absolute stinker and Welbeck was losing his shit as well.

Very much Donkey Danny today, rather than the R9 regen he typically becomes when he’s played us recently.

Very much enjoyed the crowd giving him stick. He didn’t deserve it, he wasn’t given a chance here and helped us out of a hole. But it was still nice, SJP shouldn’t be a nice play to play for the opposition, fuck everyone.

Howe will try and sign him in a month tbf.

He looked pretty good apart from that slip tbf.

Decided to give my brain a bit of a rest and largely avoided everything NUFC since the early part of this week - including the game. Checked the score a few times during the game and just felt the most immense relief that we'd won.

I've long accepted that we're not going to be a team that plays good football this season, but today has at least given belief that we're still capable and invested. The big fear after Bournemouth was that the players had given up on the manager. He wouldn't have deserved that, and it would've made for a very sorry and out-of-character end to an incredible era. So I'm glad the players are giving this ludicrous season one last push.

I'm jesting in the Europe thread; just finishing the season well would be great. The foundations are now there for us to have a non-miserable end to this uniquely taxing campaign.

Being able to draw a line under it while the vibes are vaguely positive could be powerful.

When you saw it was 2-1 I have no doubt what you were expecting the next time you checked.

Delighted that:

- my boy enjoyed his first game,

- to get three points,

- that Murphy stepped into the cone and then wore it on his head (my boy cracked up :aww:)

- Osula keeps bagging goals and playing well (although he got overzealous with a few chances!)

- the spiral of poor results ended

- Miley continued to do well

- Bruno's leadership shone through

- to see Ameritoon for a quick pint just now - lovely guy

- to watch everyone in Newcastle get mortal [emoji38]

But that was a turgid performance. I'm losing words for what to say about Pope. His reinstatement to the team is baffling. We're living through a special time to watch a professional footballer playing at the highest level - with a decade of experience under his belt - who kicks a ball like a startled giraffe every game.

The inability for the team to pass the ball second half was beyond a team lacking in confidence, it was a team devoid of substance or grist. Pope booting it long was somehow the most viable means for the team to advance the ball - which is an appalling place to be. The defensive frailty was still glaring.

I'm not normally a fan of his gameplay but I have to say I thought Jacob Murphy worked really hard and showed grit.

Seeing Gordon, Ramsey and Woltemade on the touchline - all seemingly fit - was bizarre. Struggle to believe the ends justified the means when Brighton so easily could have won.

Ultimately, I hope Howe deserves to end the season on a high (or less of a low), if that's how it is to end. A few more wins this year would be fitting.

First off, the only job to do today was win, and we did it.

In my view, the difference maker here was two things we've had very few of this season. 1. An early goal. 2. A second goal. The performance was not great overall but getting a two-goal cushion in the first half gave us something to defend.

Today felt like the first time this season we've accepted we're an average team in a league of very average teams. We worked really hard, rode our luck at times but in the end ground out a really important win.

I think we were a bit more streetwise than we have been at home recently and that made a difference. But equally, I don't think the actual quality of our game was much different to what we've delivered in recent home games. We just got a bit more lucky and then weren't as naïve as we've sometimes been in recent weeks.

We've actually done 1 quite a lot, but agree with pretty much everything else you've said there, especially the streetwise bit, which is exactly what came to mind for me in the better parts of the second half.

On the streetwise point, this is something Bruno excels in, he's so good at getting the ball when we are under pressure and then inviting a foul to then just kill time and momentum for the opposition, no one else in our team that is anywhere close to his level at that

We have been linked and known admirers. Would be quite the trio with Thiaw and hopefully a more fit Botman. Do think we need a younger more athletic cb with pace though.

I drove out six hours, 250 odd miles in other words the length of England, to visit my brother and watch this game drinks in hand at 7am, and we fucking won 3-1. I'm not sure what any other fan is looking for but I got my goddamn money's worth today howay the fucking lads thank you very much.
