I think what people say of Bruce is true of McClaren. Decent guy, competent coach, just massively out of his depth and utterly incapable of arresting the slide towards relegation which had been inevitable since the end of the 5th season. I seem to recall enjoying having someone who seemed to display a vague interest in tactics and playing people in the right position, etc, but ultimately he was nowhere near up to it. Not helped by hopeless squad management provoked by the ownership's policies.

Who knows what he paid, considering the guys before him got the club for nothing, and were desperate to get out, you’d think he might have got a good deal. The big test of his ownership commitment will be that now they are in the Premier League, how long he will hold onto them when an American consortium will no doubt come looking.

But like 60 70 million for proven goal scorer one of the best players in the premier League constantly for the past couple years isn't really being ripped off. It's just being paid the market value when you look at like other players. It's actually probably quite cheap if it's 70 million versus some of the fees
