I can see it plausible that Woody will be having a medical in a day considering the distance but Pandev, no way, unless he took one over there.

I find it quite exciting waking up in the morning, putting teletext on and finding out we have signed anyone :(

I do that

I miss the old teletext  :-[ It's not the same on digital.

I second that.

hahaha I was playing Bamboozle on channel 4's old style teletext the other day!  I was chuffed to find they've kept that going!

It's obvious that we should wait until the summer to buy Woodgate, rather than January, just like last time, according to those who accuse the club of "not buying that year"

Tottenham Hotspur have made contact with Middlesbrough regarding Jonathan Woodgate, although the North London club are expected to face competition from Newcastle United for the centre half. Kevin Keegan is a known admirer of the 28-year-old – he handed him his England debut in 1999 – and may attempt to take him back to St James’ Park.

As of yet, no bid from Newcastle has been forthcoming, but Keegan is understood to have taken soundings from associates of Woodgate, who spent 20 months on Tyneside before signing for Real Madrid for £13.4 million in 2004. There are unconfirmed suggestions that the defender has become unsettled at his hometown club, even though he joined them on a permanent basis only last year.

After his successful loan spell on Teesside last season, Woodgate’s form has dipped and while he has been troubled by cramp and hamstring injuries, Gareth Southgate’s team have appeared more assured without him.

The return to fitness of Robert Huth and Emanuel Pogatetz have been supplemented by the superb form of David Wheater, whose emergence from the club’s academy has more than compensated for Woodgate’s inconsistencies and frailties. Middlesbrough have not encouraged suitors and there has been no official word from Newcastle, but any offer would be considered.

Sam Allardyce had also been monitoring Woodgate’s form and Keegan made reference to Newcastle being obliged to sign “awkward” players this week. It is a category into which Woodgate, who has had off-field difficulties, falls. “In this area, we’re not always going to get the very best,” Keegan said. “We sometimes get the ones with warts and all.”

The approach from Tottenham, which was made on Tuesday, is intriguing, given that Woodgate becomes the third Middlesbrough player to be targeted by the club during this transfer window. Having had little luck in pursuing Adam Johnson and Stewart Downing, they have turned to Woodgate as they seek cover for Ledley King.

While they have been credited with an interest in Shola Ameobi, the Newcastle striker, Middlesbrough hope to sign Fred, of Lyons, and Afonso Alves, his fellow Brazil striker whose purported transfer from Heerenveen to AZ Alkmaar was declared void by Dutch authorities last night. AZ claimed they had a signed agreement with Alves, delaying his move to Teesside, but their case has been dismissed.

Alves has met Southgate and negotiated personal terms with Middlesbrough. Although a fee has to be determined, a sum of about £11 million has been mentioned. Alves, 26, has scored 48 goals in as many matches in all competitions for the Eredivisie club over this season and last. He would, however, require a work permit.

Goran Pandev, the Lazio forward, insisted yesterday that Newcastle have made a bid for his services. The Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia player has been at the Italian club since 2004 and his versatility would make him attractive to Keegan, who has said that his team lack creativity.

“This morning the club told me about an offer from Newcastle,” Pandev said. “I am used to [receiving] offers recently, but I don’t decide, so it’s not up to me again. Several days ago we agreed with Lazio that I would stay until June, but anything is possible.”

Quite simply Woodgate is the best defender I have ever seen in a Toon shirt. Hope he comes & stays fit. That's the gamble.

Fact. For me anyway. But he is a shadow of the player we sold, whether that is motivational issues or injuries taking its toll I dont know.

Either way the figures being bandied around are truely shocking. Its a huge gamble, if it pays off we have one hell of a player back on our books, but the signs arent great, we shall see.

Here's a prediction ...

Martin Jol / Kingdawson will rear their ugly heads at some point to whine about how Woodgate is only joining us because we are paying him £100,000 a week.

Incidentally Tiago is apparently turning them down because they are trying to get him on the cheap salary wise.

For a club that apparently has so much money, how freakin' stingy are they?

Jokers.

The reason they've got so much money is because they don't pay stupid wages, they have got the pull of the capital in their favour though.

Pull of the capital?

NEWCASTLE are ready to launch a £7m bid to sign Middlesbrough defender Jonathan Woodgate for a second time.

And while Boro boss Gareth Southgate is loath to lose the England international after brokering his permanent transfer from Real Madrid last summer, Middlesbrough officials are ready to enter into transfer negotiations if the Magpies are willing to meet their demands.

Newcastle boss Kevin Keegan has identified the purchase of a tried-and-tested centre-half as his number one objective during the current transfer window.

He has sounded out the possibility of luring Sol Campbell from Portsmouth, only to be told there is little chance of the former Arsenal defender leaving Fratton Park this month.

That forced him to turn to Woodgate, and an initial exploration has suggested that an agreement could be reached despite Middlesbrough's understandable reluctance to part company with one of their leading centre-halves.

Keegan handed Woodgate his full international debut in 1999 and is known to be a long-time admirer of the Teesside-born defender.

Woodgate's £7m transfer from Real Madrid was hailed as a major coup when it was confirmed last spring, but neither the defender nor his Middlesbrough employers have been particularly happy with the subsequent nine months.

Woodgate is understood to have grown increasingly disillusioned with life at the Riverside, despite being made captain of his hometown club at the end of last season.

And while Middlesbrough officials are aware of the 27-year-old's standing among the club's support, there is a growing acceptance that a parting of the ways could be best for all concerned.

Woodgate has missed Boro's last three matches and, on Saturday, was omitted from the starting line-up at Blackburn despite Southgate's admission that he was fit and available.

David Wheater's emergence has bolstered a centre-half roster that already includes Robert Huth, Emanuel Pogatetz and Chris Riggott, and the youngster's rapid development has already seen him leap ahead of Woodgate in the Riverside pecking order.

Tottenham have made contact with the Middlesbrough hierarchy to confirm their interest in securing Woodgate's services, but after returning to the North-East in August 2006, the former Leeds centre-half is keen to remain in the region.

A move to Newcastle offers that opportunity, and Woodgate boasts experience of life on Tyneside having made 37 appearances for the Magpies during a 19-month spell at St James' Park between 2003-04.

With Obafemi Martins at the African Cup of Nations and Mark Viduka having suffered yet another injury setback, Keegan is also hoping to sign a striker this month, and Lazio forward Goran Pandev last night claimed the Magpies had opened formal transfer discussions with his Italian employers.

Pandev, 24, a Macedonia international who has scored eight goals in 16 Serie A appearances this season, has been deemed surplus to requirements at the Stadio Olimpico after Lazio agreed a loan deal with Manchester City forward Rolando Bianchi.

David Beckham's mooted move to Tyneside, however, is not on the agenda. The England international had been linked with a sensational switch to St James' Park, but LA Galaxy president Alexei Lalas has insisted he will not be leaving his American employers.

"There is absolutely no truth in the speculation linking David with a move to Newcastle United," said Lalas.

Derek Fazackerley last night denied he had been offered a job in Keegan's new backroom set-up at St James' Park.

Fat lot of good that does then!

Oh look we've got so much money but we don't use it to improve the team ... um okay ... that's great.

The thing is good players don't just cost a lot as far as their fees go, but they also demand decent sized wages.

While Woody's form has dipped recently (rumoured to be for off the field reasons as much as on) there are a 100 footballing reasons why I wouldn't sell him let alone for any deal that includes Ameobi.

Wheater is playing out of his skin at the moment and will be the new Pallister but he's only 18 and will have a dip in form at some point. This is when Woody comes in. I'm biased but a fit focused Woodgate and Huth are as good a partnership as anything outside the top 4. Pogatetz is at left back now which is his best position because at centre half he's an accident waiting to happen.

Downing to Spurs looks more likely unfortunately but the loss of him would be sweetened with money and Paul Robinson as Schwarzer is on his way at the end of the year. Plus Adam Johnson is a ready made replacement.

I'm not alone in my threat that if Ameobi turns up at the Riverside, then I'm turning in my badge and gun. We've got enough ineffective, injury prone strikers thank you very much and he'd have to start with a hat-trick to get the crowd onside. There may not be as many of us as there are of you, but one thing all NE fans know is a carthorse when they see one.
