The old Chris Hughton discussion thread

Step up Shane Ferguson.

That's ludicrous IMO. Jonas' work rate is a tremendous asset for the team. Of course it's unsurprising his tireless running will be lauded only when we create chances off it, and he did miss a few opportunities to thread throughballs yesterday, but if you take him out of the picture completely - even the marvellous Jose Enrique wouldn't have been able to cope with Boswinga et al on the Chelsea right.

Guarantee you anyone else who comes in for Jonas (which is laughably absurd as a suggestion, to me) would not do half as much work for the team.

Yesterday we were up against it, and whilst he didn't go forward more intelligently, his contribution was still massive against a very good Chelsea side.

Ferguson should be on our bench. I find Jonas' work-rate and ball-carrying abilities useful to the team, but having three shit forwards on the bench is pointless, I'd sooner have a genuine left-wing option that might make an impact on there.

Jonas' workrate was almost nonexistent yesterday, baffling defence of him imo. That said we have nothing else out there unless we try Routledge on the left when Barton comes back. Ameobi was crap as well so wouldnt be too bothered who comes in for him if Hughton changes it for WBA. What was wrong with Nolan anyway?

Work rate isn't enough to be in the 1st team. And his work rate was generally poor yesterday and he made Jose do a lot of work by standing in stupid positions. A few times if he just moved 3 or 4 more yards it would have helped Jose. A lot of Jose's messing about yesterday was courtesy of Jonas being lazy.

Generally his work rate is very good. But recently i've been disappointed, perhaps it his injury. But if it is he shouldn't be playing

This. I'd at least give him a spot on the bench if we're not going to loan him out. Give him a few minutes sometime.

I agree, If Jonas wasn't there to carry the ball out past the halfway line countless times and take pressure of our defence then who else was going to? Not bothered anyway because there isn't a chance Hughton would drop him after that performance.

It' all good going on about how we need to strengthen in January, but I'm pretty sure NUFC is operating at a loss still. Be realistic man.

Hughton said we had capacity to take on another player in the summer, if we still have that capacity...he has now had half the season (jan) to asses the team and see who has been coping well.

I would use that capacity to bring another striker on loan and I would be on the blower to get Krancjar on loan til the end of the season, with a view to buy of course.

We cant have the team stalling when Barton and Tiote are out.

I missed the context but did he mean capacity to buy or just wage capacity to bring in a loan?  I doubt we could get a loan in good enough to cover either of them in January and if we got another tiote I'd shit myself.

Not saying we don't have to strengthen, mind, just that the window of opporunity to get better players in might have passed.  Who knows though, Chris is a sly one as no one saw Tiote coming.  Gamble that paid off, once in a lifetime deal or just good scouting?

I find this list to be pretty impressive personally considering 1. the amount of money he had to spend and 2. strengthening our weak areas.

To be fair Best didn't look shocking in the Championship with us, he just failed to net a goal. Then you look at pre-season and he was looking a tidy little player that had started to settle.

Blatantly a very average player that got signed as he had hit a bit of a green patch with Coventry at the beginning of the season and other targets had slipped through the net, but you never know, if he hadn't have gotten that injury in pre-season he may have produced a few performances for us in the prem this season.
