From nufc.com:

Unexpected arrival

Having confirmed the patently obvious need to recruit a goalscorer and a left back before the transfer window closes, Newcastle are set to make a further dip into the transfer market - to sign a goalkeeper....

Charlton Athletic 'keeper Rob Elliot is expected on Tyneside soon to complete a permanent transfer.

25 year-old Elliott -  linked with West Ham recently - is in the final year of his current contract and turned down a new deal at the League One club.

That prompted the recent arrival of Ben Hamer from Reading who took squad number 1. However, Eliott has played in all three of Charlton's league games so far this season.

Signing his first professional contract at The Valley in 2004, Elliot debuted in March 2005, while on loan to Notts County. A season and a half with Accrington Stanley then followed before he an Addicks debut in April 2008 - the first of three games he played before their boss Alan Pardew lost his job as Charlton manager.

Charlton fan sites first linked Elliott with a move to SJP back in May of this year, claiming that the Kent-born former Republic of Ireland youth international was set to link up again with ex-Addicks goalkeeper coach Andy Woodman, now fulfilling that role at Gallowgate.

And here's me thinking transfers took ages, great news this, can't wait to see him. Bet he's dead good.

I was just saying earlier today we need to bin some promising local youngsters and get some Charlton players in.

Possibly a replacement for Forster.

I can't see that buying this lad is going to stop us signing a left back or striker. He's not going to cost the earth surely.

And let's actually wait till we see this lad play before we judge whether it's a good move.
