Kanji Posted May 27, 2015 Share Posted May 27, 2015 As a sporting club your aim is to win, which is what bothers me about the sport today. It's about TV money and sponsorships and such. Granted if you're actively using those outlets to better your squad, your staff, facilities etc to scout better or develop better or what have you then fair enough. But the idea of sporting clubs is to win something or figure out a way to one day win in near or long term and constantly trying to bridge gaps or gulfs in finance through tactics or style of play etc. frustrating none the less that just because you're not a perceived media elite club you have no business trying to be one or wanting to win one. RANGERS are ready to go to war with Mike Ashley in a bid to rip up a crippling commercial deal which includes a massive seven-year notice period. The Ibrox club confirmed last night they have agreed to Ashley’s demands to stage a General Meeting and set a date of June 12 for the latest shareholder showdown. But in a move certain to antagonise the Newcastle chief, chairman Dave King has put forward his own counter proposals which include removing the voting rights of those who own stakes in other clubs. And he also plans to use the meeting to blow the lid off secret details of the contracts handed to Ashley’s retail company Sports Direct by previous Rangers owner Charles Green. And Record Sport can reveal the new regime are particularly outraged at discovering the length of their contractual ties to Ashley’s firm. In short, if Rangers binned the agreement today they would trigger a notice period which would last until May 2022 which means that, effectively, Green gave Ashley an astonishing seven-year rolling contract. King is now promising to provide the club’s shareholders further explosive details relating to the contracts and how much Ashley is raking in from selling their jerseys – even though the Londoner’s lawyers have been attempting to keep such details under wraps. As a consequence of the heightening tensions between the board and Ashley, it now seems certain there will be no chance of an agreement being struck between Rangers and Newcastle for the permanent transfer of Haris Vuckic. Record Sport revealed in May that Ashley, who owns almost nine per cent of the Ibrox club as well as a 75 per cent stake in Rangers Retail, had turned his guns on the new regime by calling for the GM. Ashley’s company MASH Holdings, which requisitioned the meeting, is demanding a vote on the repayment of the £5m crisis loan which they provided to the old board in January. They also want to know why Rangers shares are no longer trading on the AIM and what steps were taken to appoint a new nominated advisor. MASH is also seeking full terms of the £1.5m loan made to the club by the Three Bears – director Douglas Park along with wealthy fans George Letham and George Taylor. Yesterday King confirmed the board will answer all of Ashley’s questions at the meeting. But, in an aggressive move, he then revealed his plan to call Ashley’s bluff by exposing the truth behind his iron-fisted grip on the club’s retail wing. The statement read: “The Directors also propose that at the GM they shall: Provide shareholders with a breakdown of the income received by Rangers Retail Limited (“RRL”) and the payments made by RRL to the Club. “Advise shareholders on certain of the terms of the shareholders agreement relative to RRL and the effect these terms could have if valid and enforceable.” King also pledged to let shareholders in on the club’s recent run-in with the SFA over Ashley’s dual control charge and revealed that Rangers could be hammered if the Newcastle owner makes another power grab. And in a further dig at Ashley, the board plan to ask the meeting to consider removing the voting rights of shareholders who own stakes in other clubs. The statement added: “The Directors will update shareholders as to why they believes this step is necessary, the potential effect of any further breach of these rules and the timetable for presenting a resolution for shareholders’ consideration.” Shareholders will be advised by King to vote against Ashley’s resolution – that MASH is repaid their £5m loan with immediate effect. Instead the board want fans to back their own resolution which will call for the board to renegotiate the terms of the business relationship with Ashley and Sports Direct including that massive seven-year rolling deal. This sort of shit is exactly my fears for what happens when we eventually get rid of Ashley - that his stench will linger for years after he departs... It's a shame for us that he's fighting a losing battle up north, as it means one possible reason for selling up is off the radar potentially, but credit to them all the same for standing up to him and getting their way. Our situation is vastly more complicated with him owning the club lock stock and barrel, but we could learn a thing or two from Rangers fans when it comes to opposing Ashley and fighting tooth and nail to force him out of our club. Mike Ashley will sue, claim the contract is worth zillions of pounds for him, the club will protest that it's only worth losses for them, and lawyers will battle it out for a compromise.
