Loved the fact that goal 1 was route one and the pen came from a long throw

Loved Simpson taking the piss with the throw ins

Were Ba and Jonas auditioning for a porno in the Post Game interviews? Jonas especially

Delap had 13 throws last night, taking a total of just over 5 minutes from ball reaching his hand to letting it fly. No problem wiht using log throws, but there has to be a time allowance (10 seconds?)

Overall great night

I thought Pulis could have been a bit more generous to us in his post-match interview. He said it was down to a couple of defensive mistakes, but in reality we put his rather one-dimensional team in their place and he knew it.

They also produced some rather cute challenges in our penalty area - two by Huth and one by Walters - where they weren't going to get the ball but made sure our lad was going to get hurt in winning it. (twice on Raylor, once on Krul)

The one by Huth on Krul looked quite dangerous because the whistle had long gone, Krul had relaxed and then Huth went steaming into him. I don't believe for a second that he didn't hear the whistle.

It was the teamwork that had me cheering last night. Been a while since I've seen a Newcastle team protect each other and work for each other like that.

I have to admit to not watching a lot of Stoke but I thought they were very poor last night. That isn't a prelude to underplaying the result but were they shitter than normal? Obviously we take some credit if so but from the first few minutes on I was unimpressed with their passing, for a team with a reputation for being direct, they knocked countless balls over the top to no one in particular or for goal kicks.

our team ethic, work rate, closing down, is making opponents look poor imo. thats to our credit- not thier failings.

Indeed. When they did get time on the ball their delivery from open play was shit though. Was just a bit surprised at that.

Just read the last 6 pages of this thread, was hooked. Really entertaining to read

Absolutely delighted with the shift we put in last night. Tactically brilliant, everyone carried out their role and played their part.

Krul - 8 - If only for the amount he had to deal with. Misjudged/dropped the ball once or twice, as well as a few sloppy kicks, but was brave, came out and tried to hold onto the ball. Don't recall him having any shots to save...

Simpson - 7.5 - Loved the towel antics.

STaylor - 7.5

Colo - 7.5 - When he kept that ball on by the touchline

Raylor - 7.5 - Good use of long throws, put his body on the line for the team (not for the first time this season).

Obertan - 7.5 (poss an 8) - Good outlet for the team on the counter, brilliant cross for the goal. Still unsure on his short passing, they almost seem lazy/lethargic.

Guthrie - 8.5 - Very good performance, looked confident bringing the ball forward, and actually looked mobile/fit. Looked like the player I thought he could become when he first signed.

Cabaye - 7 - Mixed game, some quality passing, some sloppy, particularly in the 2nd half. Worked hard as always.

Jonas - 9 MOM - Did what was clearly asked of him, worked his bollocks off and helped pretty much completely nullify Pennant.

Best - 8.5 - Work rate, strength, first touch, and dribbling ability, all things people are starting to realise he has in abundance. Tireless effort.

Ba - 9 - Absolute poachers performance combined with a hard working shift. Defended from the front with Best and deserved his hat trick.

Oh and Perch actually put in a quality tackle near the end too... Sammy and Gosling didn't really have time to do anything.

We played very well in the first half. The second half drop was predictable because we defended much deeper and invited some pressure onto us without really showing intent when counter-attacking. We defended brilliantly; much better than we passed it around. Jonas was awesome. R Taylor and Simpson both had what in my opinion were their best games of the season, evidenced by the fact that Krul only had one save to make. Honestly, it was just a brilliant team display. We pressured them out of their game in the first half, controlled the game well and very much deserved our lead. Guthrie also had a fine game and really masked Tiote's absence with his running and poise on the ball. This was probably our most accomplished display this season, imo, and we weren't even at our best offensively. I'm still stunned at how well we defended.

Also interesting is that I think this was our first match in a while that we had less than 50% possession. I know we were pretty even or slightly ahead in the first half, which shows that we're still able to control possession when we need and want to. We defended much deeper in the second half and gave up possession when we had to risk throwing men forward, which was an understandable decision that worked out so I'm not worried about the overall possession statistic.
