He's a more (positionally) advanced Obertan. Awful signing so far, offers nothing in this current setup and i suspect an average prem striker/forward if everything was ideal and offered on a plate.

A player like this should never be a starter. He should be allowed time to bed in, coming on as a sub, working to get his confidence up which is crucial given his limitations. As it is he's isolated up front and all the pressure is on him to get the goals ffs. I mean you couldn't make it up  It's awful, truly awful player management.

Thrown into the deep end, and then some. It'd be nice if Pardew told him to get defenders on the turn rather than having to be the bloke that constantly has to show for the ball and try to play teammates in from dinked long balls. de Jong should be the link man but he was seemingly told to push right up, yesterday.

He displayed a great touch and acceleration at one point in the second half., if he's going to be a success here, we're going to have to play to those sorts of strengths. That means a proper game plan would be needed, though, so expect more aimless shit for the foreseeable.

Lone strikers need people breaking from deep to support them though.  I'm not convinced by him yet but when we're not giving him any support and not getting any decent numbers forward it's hard to judge him.

One thing that stood out for me last night was that when Palace were breaking forward they had 5 or 6 players up there going for the box and supporting the attack.  When we did the same we had maybe 3 if we were lucky.

As others say, impossible to judge him based on playing under Pardew.

He's ploughing a lonely furrow. Pardew wants some athletic big man up there that he can lump long balls to, and Riviere is the closest we have. Ayoze might well be a better footballer, but he's be even worse under our system than Riviere as he's too small and would still have to suffer getting footballs with ice on them raining down from the clouds.

Yet Perez has still done more in our shirt than Riviere.

But Perez has come on during the last 20 mins usually when the game is a lot more open and we are pushing forward more.

There's no doubt he's getting shit service, but he's offering virtually nothing.

Ba and Remy also got shit service but still managed to create things for themselves - might be harsh to compare him to them but as things stand he's our main man up front, and if that doesn't change in the next 24 hours or so we're utterly fucked. Unless somehow Cisse comes back and remembers where the goal is...

Mint to see this guy has been utterly written off by you guys already

Written off in terms of can contribute? No

Written off in terms of can score 20 goals per season? Yes.

The vast majority of players in the league won't score 20 goals per season. Anyone thinking Riviere could do that is mental.

Looks like I haven't written him off then.
