r0cafella
Mentioned in his interview that he received strong references relating to Cathro and Smith. Don't think Benitez would have kept them on if he hadn't. Although, I do think there is a justifiable element behind having local knowledge among the staff. Pecchia was brought in to his staff at Napoli because he wanted that local expertise. Similarly, I recall he had Sammy Lee as coach at Liverpool. He also mentioned hiring Zenden at Chelsea due to this as well.
Mag_in_NZ
Fabio Pecchia - 42 year-old Italian-born ex Napoli & Juventus midfielder who served as assistant to Rafa during his time in charge at Napoli and Real Madrid. Antonio Gómez Pérez - 42 year old Spanish-born ex Real Madrid midfielder who has worked with Rafa at Liverpool, Napoli and Real Madrid. Francisco de Míguel Moreno - 43 year-old Spanish -born strength and conditioning coach who has been with Benitez at his last five clubs. Unreal, who is now going to take responsibility for SDJ's injury roster

SteveMc
Shows what they can do in a few days when needed. All the pissing about making back room appointments in the past - totally avoidable.

Smith especially is vulnerable as Valero has been a key member of Benitez's staff for the past decade.
TRon
He explains who they are in this interview Interview is up: http://www.nufc.co.uk/articles/20160311/nufctv-benitez-the-first-interview_2281670_5412606 Just watched that now. I've never seen a manager with such a clear sense of direction and self belief at this club. Keegan and SBR were one offs just because they could inspire a city emotionally, but this guy is probably what we need right now. I feel twice as confident already having watched that interview. KaKa
So weird you say that because I noticed him in the most recent training photos looking really cheerful, and I did think at the time that it seemed he was more into it than previously.
CaliMag
Rather than pushing out Cathro, what about giving him the reserves and academy and finally f***ing firing Pedro? He needs to go. He has been a disaster for ages. He has been a liability longer than anyone FFS.

That can wait though as he needs to concentrate on the first team for the rest of the season.
Deuce
Cathro mentioned as possible Dundee United manager http://www.chroniclelive.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/newcastle-assistant-ian-cathro-being-11288268
Nattfare
The chance of getting his own gig in Dundee United is probably very tempting. If Benitez is still here next season and he wants to keep Cathro in the staff, I think he should stick around. He's still only 29 and learning under one of the high profiles in football would only do him good in the long run.

Join Dundee and he enters the wilderness of nothing football and will disappear under the radar. From what I've heard, he has more input now and Rafa rates him. I think under McClaren he was brought in because of potential, but was pushed back in the input stakes and that kind of not exactly pissed him off, but made him a bit pushed out. The fact he is still here speaks volumes regarding what Rafa thinks of him.
