Is he out of contract? It's a staggeringly bad decision obviously and the only possible reason for keeping him is in the hope that some mug will come along and buy him for a fee rather than lose him for nothing. And they wonder why they're mid table fodder

Don’t think he’s out of contract. He’s 33, they only paid £8m for him last year so you’d think he’d have a year left.

So they paid £8m for a 32 year old and only give him a year contract. Madness

Wonder if this is an agreed clause extension to the original contract. Either way he’s a lucky boy as he’s finished at premier league level.

He's out of contract but had the option for the extra year I think. Didn't realise he was as old as 33

This. Club have took up the extra year but for how much they pay him in wages they seem to be in a typically lose lose scenario.

David Luiz  cost Arsenal £24MILLION

You including wages in that?

correct it seems without wages he cost them ÂŁ13million

Everywhere states £8m for the transfer. I’d probably go with that, no reason to doubt it, is there?

The Athletic claim his deal was broken up into an ÂŁ8m transfer fee, ÂŁ6m in intermediaries fees, and ÂŁ10m on his annual salary.

So £8m then. Signing on fees, agent fees and wages aren’t counted when most people talk about how much a transfer of a player is from one club to another. Ashley attempted it to say how we’d spent all the carroll money but it didn’t catch on for obvious reasons.

Though you are right to highlight for one season so for this clown has cost arsenal a grand total of ÂŁ24m. Clubs have probably spent ÂŁ200m+ on him over his career.

He's wank, and has been for years. Lampard was right to bin him off.

Nah, his second spell at Chelsea was generally good. Outstanding the season they won the league with Conte and generally solid enough other than that

He was great in that Conte season playing in the back 3 but don't think he's been at that level since or before that.

Surprised he's never had a long run at defensive mid

He's got loads of skill and ability but I honestly wouldn't trust him to play in any position in the defensive 2/3's. He's not a CD, he's shocking there. He's not got the engine to be a modern FB. He's not got the positional discipline to play CDM and he's too sloppy to play normal CM. He's unique, a talented player with no position to play in.

Legs have gone now and he doesnt have Kante to protect. Classic Arsenal.
