I think he will discuss a new contract with the club, but they need to aim higher than just survival and probably need to spend big on at least one player in the summer.

Its unlikely, but still hoping if we look certain to stay up then someone will buy the club.

For those that don't want to give the Fail clicks

Mike Ashley will turn attention to the future of boss Rafa Benitez after backing the Newcastle manager by breaking the club's transfer record

Mike Ashley is to focus on the future of Rafa Benitez after the transfer window

Newcastle spent £21m on Atlanta United's Miguel Almiron to break their record

Benitez's deal expires in the summer and he has been stalling on a new contract

Mike Ashley will now prioritise securing Rafa Benitez’s future at Newcastle United after backing the manager by finally breaking the club’s 14-year transfer record.

Miguel Almiron arrived from Atlanta United on Thursday in a deal worth up to £21million with Benitez having told Ashley he was his No 1 target when the owner took the squad for dinner in October.

Benitez’s contract expires in the summer and he has so far stalled on the offer of a five-year deal and, more recently, a 12-month extension.

However, Sportsmail has been told that one option now being explored is a three-year offer with the promise of trying to build the club.

Crucially, Benitez wants guarantees over investment in the playing squad and improvements made to the training ground.

Ashley is planning for the future on the assumption he will remain as owner after takeover talks collapsed. It is said any party who now emerges with interest must provide proof of their financial means immediately. The club has not been taken off the market.

However, Ashley sees the sense in keeping Benitez and is also mindful of how damaging relegation would be, especially as the manager would leave and the value of the club would decrease dramatically.

That is why the Almiron deal was sanctioned and it is understood Ashley himself intervened and used contacts in America to make sure it did not fall through.

An asking price of £25m coupled with a £4m agent’s commission were threatening to scupper the transfer. The fee was negotiated to around £16m plus £5m in add-ons, while the agent’s cut was also significantly reduced. Almiron and his family were said to be concerned that the agent’s demands could jeopardise his dream move.

Sources say it is hoped a compromise can now be met between Ashley and Benitez and that he will agree to stay on as boss beyond this season.

Meanwhile, Almiron will not be able to make his debut at Spurs on Saturday while he awaits a visa, but Monaco loanee Antonio Barreca, a defender, is available.

Backing Rafa by signing Almirón?

It’s the equiverlent of a young kid wanting a PlayStation when they first come out because everyone else in his class is getting one, but his dad refused year after year because they cost silly money and there are boxes of board games in the loft so go and play with them. And then finally when the kid turns 21, his dad says fuck it, here you go son, a PlayStation and I’ve got you FIFA 95. Saw it at the car booty for a tenner and when I saw it again a few hours later it was knocked down to 8 quid, but you good old dad here got it for a fiver. If you want more games, you can buy them yourself mind...

Meanwhile all his uni mates are playing FIFA 2019 against people all over the world.

Poor cunt is a Toon supporter as well.

Backing Rafa/spending money fuck off

Well if he doesn’t sign one and goes to Leicester or somewhere, they will just trot out we tried offered him a great deal spent £21million in the window not our fault and unfortunately a lot of fans will just agree with that and carry on plodding to the ground with a Sherwood in the dugout.

I hope not, I hope it’s all out chaos but can’t see it.

Aye, unreal. Not surprised with it being from the Daily Mail but am surprised that it's Craig Hope that's written it.

Hope clearly has a direct line to Ashley’s camp, always breaking exclusives like this.

Which players did Poch already have at his disposal?  How many players did he buy with that money?

How much of that money was he told to recoup from player sales?

How many avoidable relegations has he had to fight, after which he had to improve the squad to PL level?

There's no point even responding to Keys, the guy is a dinosaur wind-up merchant desperately trying to get himself a UK gig again, most probably because he can't find any women in the Middle East who are prepared to shit on him.

Owld Hairy Hands is at it again...

Rafa Benitez has now spent £145m in 3 years at Newcastle. In the same period Pochettino has spent £179m at Spurs - and guided them into the top 3 in each of the last 3 seasons. ?‍♂️

Has he? Can some keen individual break that down?
