Callum Wilson

Takes a bit of gloss of the window and everyone’s gripes about not getting another attacking option, have become that bit louder.

They must have had some idea that the injury was going to be a bit longer than 8 weeks? He was still using crutches in Saudi and wasn’t even doing any light training work other than rehab, by Wilson’s own account.

Just makes the failure to get another forward in look 10 times worse now.

Joelinton has to become backup striker now unfortunately.

I'd rather shift ASM up tbh. Neither in any way ideal but feels like we'd lose way more than we'd gain by shifting Jo back up there compared to ASM.

Howe will have to get tactically creative if we ever do lose Wood but agree that Joelinton needs to be the deputy. We can't be putting Maxi at CF. A, he's terrible there and B, we lose everything he brings from the left.

No worse than Joelinton there to be honest.

I'd prefer to stick a bairn in than shoehorn players into positions we know they can't play.

Step in Ndiweni...

Yep. Give the lad a chance. Wonder if we’ve a recall on Anderson if we need to at any point. Give him a months game time and bring him back in.

Whilst I think I would actually rather see a young lad given the chance first. Joelinton’s resurgence has pretty much all been under Howe, where he has played a few different roles.

Admittedly, it has mainly come when he has played deeper. But he seems sharper, a yard quicker, stronger on the ball and just looks a totally different player to the one we signed.

Plus, you’d like to hope he wouldn’t be playing as a lone striker with nobody within 50 yards of him, which was the case under Bruce most weeks. He might get some sort of support and service.

Not ideal, whatever way we cut it. Wood has been uninspiring so far and if he gets injured. We look fucked.

We've surely learned by now that Joelinton isn't best used as a striker. His finishing (including his heading for some reason) is a real weakness.

When he plays in midfield, he's able to use his strength to hold opponents off and retain the ball. Defenders are usually bigger and stronger, and when he's up against them he struggles.

Just done a little Dennis-style scouting on Ndiweni. Looks very promising indeed. And doesn't look like the type who would be nervous about stepping up.

I'd really like to know what Eddie Howe's feelings are in regards to not getting another attacker in - has he said to the owners he has enough to keep us up without the extra body, or was he pushing and telling them we really need to get another forward as we are currently powder-puff and will struggle for goals.

I think all of us were expecting a striker to be signed even before the injury to Wilson. We'll only know if it has been a mistake at the end of the season.

Chris Wood banging a few in soon would certainly help ease those concerns though.

Wood as an addition to Wilson would have been absolutely fine.

Wood to effectively replace Wilson is a fucking disaster - not least because he doesn't seem in the least bit suited to Howe's preferred footballing style.

Of course he isn't, no one's saying that. But playing ASM up front means you've got someone there who is basically incapable of playing the role and you're removing your very dangerous left-winger, so it's basically double jeopardy. Joelinton, meanwhile, might not even start in his best position when everyone is fit and firing.

If Wood is out then he's going to be replaced by a square peg. Joelinton is the most appealing one to choose from imo.

Agree with this.

This is the beginning of the end for Wilson's time here sadly. We cannot build a team around a striker who is only fit for half a season. Such a shame tbh, because he is as good a finisher as most when he does play.
