You don’t need to worry about the money available under FPP. You should worry for the number and type of players who is willing to join us at this moment.

You are right of course, we don't have much option with the position we are in, but beyond this season we will have to keep our heads, we don't want to end up like Everton who threw a boatload of money at players thinking they had cracked it, only to end up with a bunch of duds who they can't shift now because of high wages.

Trippier would actually make sense though, because you know you are getting one of the best right backs in the world.

Realistically we need a new defence, central midfield and a Wilson back-up. Probably asking a bit too much in January.

Even if we succeed in filling a few of the above, there's a good chance it will all be a bit QPR. Team full of mercenaries barely interested.

Should score double figures against Rotherham next season at least.

The tifo vid posted a few pages ago suggests we have the capacity to spend more than we (sensibly) could this January without falling foul of FFP rules.

And as someone else suggested - if we’re paying £25m for Trippier, then our budget certainly isn’t £50m.

If we can get two and a half solid seasons out of Tripper, and he helps take us from relegation candidates to the brink of the top six in that time, then £25m is an absolute steal - at which time, we can just buy the best right back in the world

Also, signing Tripplier could be the "statement of intent" that we need, and could be used to convince decent names to sign for us despite our current league position.

Nah the whole league will be laughing their tits off at us

It does not matter if he's the best full back in the world when we obvsiously need more urgent upgrades elsewhere in the team. Manquillo is probably the least of our worries in defence atm, nobody can deny that.

Nah. I've always liked Manquillo, always found him to be somewhat reliable, but recently he has been neglecting his duties. The second goal against Leicester was an embarrassment for him. Could always blame the skipper for him failing to set the offside trap correctly, but giving up to claim offside is a footballing crime.

Our new owners are spending billions on building a big fucking city in the middle of the desert that’s a single straight line. And you’re worried about spending £25m on a fullback?

Manquilo is shit, that's a ridiculous comment. Fullback is our biggest problem area. Both sides!

I'm categorically denying it.

Not sure Neom is the best thing to mention if you know how much of a fuck up that's been.

It’s perfect if you want to understand their willingness to throw good money after bad on absolutely mental projects.

FFP is still there though so even at the top end of the potential budget they definitely won't be able to Neom it until it works with Newcastle.

Just imagining SJP here:

Manquillo was alright a few years ago when we'd just come up from the championship. But in reality he's like the majority of the rest of our squad, should have been upgraded once we'd established ourselves back in the top division. I stuck up for him plenty in the first season, but he's no more than a relatively mobile full back who's not particularly good at defending, and doesn't attack with much conviction either. Other teams are getting better, we've been getting worse season by season.

Aye, after a dodgy start [out of position] he settled, and whilst he never showered himself in either glory or shame, I always felt he was at least reliable in his position. Always thought he'd be a trustworthy back-up to our improvement. Then Bruce brought in Krafth.
